Holiday Boutique by Irena Demkiw Roma Hayda, Halia Balaban, Diane Lytwyn, Yaroslava Kovach and Irena Demkiw. Paul Lytwyn, president o f the Ukrainian American Club in Southport, Connecticut. On November 15, 2003, UNWLA Branch 73 hosted its second Holiday Boutique at the Ukrainian Club in Southport, Connecticut. The purpose of this event was to raise money for orphans and destitute pensioners in Ukraine, to introduce the American pub lic to Ukrainian culture, and to entice Ukrainian Americans to more active participation in the Ukrain ian community. The program planning committee consisted of Roma Hayda, Halya Balaban, Diane Lytwyn, Yaro slava Kovach, and Irena Demkiw. The committee planned an event that would appeal to those attending in many ways. A diverse variety of merchandise in cluded Ukrainian ceramics by Marika and Myron Bo- kalo, jewelry by Golden Lion, amber jewelry by Ja- woruk, ceramics by Sophia Zielyk, hair ornaments by Laura Pappas, paintings by Oksana Pikush, creative silk scarves by Nina Lapchyk, gem jewelry by Tania Vitvitsky, embroidered blouses and music by Yurij Zimbitsky. The August Collection represented sixteen artists from Ukraine whose creative designs ranged from ceramics and embroidery to wood work and re verse glass painting. A wide assortment of holiday food comple mented the spirit of the boutique. Kolachi, nut and poppy seed rolls, pampushky, and a variety of cookies were available. Our local branch is fortunate to have in our community a professional baker, Taras Slevinsky, who donates his time to provide the holiday breads that made our baked goods section very successful. Mem bers of the UNWLA provided pastries and other baked goods. Yaroslava Kovach and Diane Lytwyn were responsible for all of the food served in the buffet. Two tables were dedicated to activities of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America and the Ukrainian museum. On display was a tree decorated with handmade egg ornaments, three beautiful baskets filled with holiday bounty, poinsettia plants, lovely miniature evergreen trees, many elegant “didukhy,” and original printed blank cards with the Boutique signature angel. Branch members and their friends staffed the exhibit tables, sold crafts ad art works, and served the delicious holiday food. Stacy Maxwell handled all of the advertising in the local newspapers. Our second Holiday Boutique was very suc cessful After all the bills were paid, $3,000 was sent to the Social Welfare Chair of the UNWLA who distrib uted the money where it was most needed. Our branch hopes to repeat this successful event on November 6, 2004. 20 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЖОВТЕНЬ 2004 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
