OUR LIFE Monthly у published by Ukrainian National Women’s League of America Vol. LXI OCTOBER 2004 Editor: TAMARA STADNYCHENKO From the Desk of the President The Executive Committee and National Board of the UNWLA salute Camilla Huk, who was recently elected vice chair of the Governor's Council and serves on the council's Education Committee of the State of New Jersey, and Bozhena Olshaniwsky, who has been appointed to the New Jersey Governor's Ethnic Advisory Council At the WFUWO Annual Board Meeting in Rome, Italy. From left: Maria Shkambara, Iryna Kurowyckyj, Lilia Hryhorovych, Olha Kobec, and Oxana Farion. The Annual Board Meeting of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations was held in Rome, Italy, from the September 3 through September 5, 2004, the first Annual Board Meeting of WFUWO to be held on the European continent. Participants convened at the Inn of Ss. Serhiy and Vakch, a historic site imbued with a positive energy that worked well for all of us and inspired a festive atmosphere. Attending the meeting were fourteen WFUWO affiliates and two women representing unaffiliated associa tions: Jaroszlava Haryanyj from Hungary and Anna Umliva from Italy. There were also two invitees from Ukraine who were sponsored by the UNWLA and the Ukrainian Gold Cross—Lilia Hryhorovych, president of Soyuz Ukrainok Ukrainy and National Deputy to Ukraine's Verhhovna Rada, and Olha Kobec, president of the Olena Teliha organization. Two presidents of Soyuz Ukrainok branches in Italy (Naples and Rome) also attended. With observers, there were 50 attendees at the meeting. On Friday September 3, 2004, European Conference president Lesia Diakiwska opened the meeting with an official greeting. She then invited Bishop Hlib Lonchyna to say a prayer. Bishop Hlib also gave us some back ground history of the church of Ss. Serhy and Vakch and the Inn. It is a historical monument of our antiquity, a treasure in the center of old Rome. Cardinal Barberini and his brother Pope Urban VIII donated the church and the Inn to the Kyivan Metro politan in 1595, after the Uzhorod Union, and all the representatives of Kyivan Metropolitans have lived and worked there for 300 years. The property is located in "old Rome" and is surrounded by monuments. In front of the church is Plaza Madonna Dei Monti; the old Forum Romano is 240 meters away.
