UNV/LA WELCOMES NADYA SVI7LYCHNY AND HER SONS IN THE FREE WORLD On October 15, 1978, during the yearly conference of the UNWLA National Board, the news broke about Nadya Svitl/chna’s arrival in Rome. Those present reacted with joyful enthusiasm and immediately resolved to send Mrs. Svitlychna a telegram of greetings which is translated below: Dear Mrs. Svitlychna! We women gathered in UNWLA greet you upon your arrival in the free world and assure you of our friendship and readi ness to support you in the future. May God bless you and yours, UNWLA The telegram was sent to Rome, where Nadya Svitlychna is staying at the pension of the Church of Sts. Serhij and Vakch. The following day the UNWLA was informed that she received the greeting and expressed heartfelt thanks. In addition to sending the telegram, participants of the con ference unanimously decided to assist Mrs. Svitlychna financially. News of the greeting and the support of Nadya Svitlychnya was transmited to Ukraine on radio"Svoboda” the next day. your views would correspond to those of the majority of women, or would they be different? The results of the questionnaire show that, in general, we Ukrainian women are very conservative. Child-rearing and the family’s well-being are the first priority, and various personal ambitions occupy only a secondary place. If a Ukrainian woman works, she does so for economic reasons, to change the economic foundation of her family. But she would rather be home with her family, even when the children are already grown and no longer require her continual presence. The women who work just for self-satisfaction, or to ex press themselves as talented individuals are very few. DISCRIMINATION Next is the question of discrimination against wo men in our community. Does such discrimination exist? Superficially, it would appear that it does not. Women, especially older women, are respected and everyone, (especially men) treats them very politely. But here we are not interested in etiquette. Here we are asking the question: ’’Does the Ukrainian man regard the Ukrainian woman as his equal?” How do matters stand in organizations where membership is composed of both men and women? In community organizations, women can be secretaries or social-cultural affairs chairpersons, but all the chairmen or presidents are men. As examples, let us take UCCA, UNA, Self-Reliance, UCCA Educational Council, Plast, SUMA and many more. Are there no wo men among us with leadership qualities? Or is any man at all better than a woman leader? No discrimination?! Think about it. YOU’RE A PERSON VASYL SYMONENKO You know that you're a person; You know this; or do you not? Because a woman as mother is always home, she has a great influence (perhaps too great) on raising children and managing the household. Many women regard the Ukrainian family as matriarchal. Whether this is really so is hard to say. It is something that merits a lengthy dis cussion, for which we have no time today. ERA It is strange that Ukrainian women are poorly in formed about the proposed Equal Rights Amendment (E.R.A.) to the U.S. Constitution, dealing with legal e- quality of men and women.Some Ukrainian women in their answers to me said that ’’ERA is ’women’s lib’ and is therefore unworthy of our attention." I say ERA is not just ’women’s lib’ and is worthy of careful study. First of all, it is a proposal for an amendment to the Constitution, of which there are already twenty-six. The proposal itself is very simple: it talks about the illegal discrimination against people because of their sex. Be cause the U.S. Constitution has given special rights to men, the only goal of ERA is to legally equalize the rights of men and women. There are various problems with the passage of ERA: improper interpretation of the proposed amend ment intimidates people, and keeps them from voting in favor of it. Also, since 51% of the U. S. population is fe male, passage of the amendment could mean that, theoretically at least, women might gain a political edge in the country.
