M ARCH, 1970 N o . 3 Our Ukrainian Church There are many national sym bols; there are many forces th a t work to unite a nation into a strongly united whole. Through out our Ukrainian history many forces were at work to bind us into a strong national unit, but none as strong as the Ukrainian Church. It is w orth thinking about the national significance of our Church now, during the tradition laden E aster season, so closely interwoven w ith liturgi cal observances. Due to geographic and historic factors, which we will not dis cuss here, the influence of the Papacy was never very strong in Ukraine. This fact favored a development of ritual traditions w ithin our Church consistent w ith the m entality and psycholo gical needs of the populace. Such independent development ac counts for the way our national awareness is strongly identified w ith our ritual and liturgical t r a ditions. Suffice it only to rem em ber how strongly Ukrainians re sisted the attem pts of the Polish crown to Latinize us. The pres sure was so strong, th a t even Uniates — U krainians who ac cepted the Pope’s suprem acy but retained their ritual and liturgi cal traditions, were discrim i nated against for centuries. This discrim ination did not break the people. As soon as th e opportun ity presented itself, the populace turned to the U krainian U niate Church as to a natural leader in the renewal of a national iden tity. On the other hand the will to retain a national identification drove th e U krainian Orthodox Church to declare its independ ence from Moscow and to seal th at declaration w ith the blood of countless m artyrs. In view of such strong ties be tween national and religious identity among the U krainian people, it should come as no sur prise th a t the destruction of one would bring on the destruction of the other. T hat knowledge lies behind our attem pts to preserve our religious identity a t all cost. The Communist are also aware of this. Since they took over Ukraine at the height of a re birth of national feeling, they could not attack our national identity directly w ithout arous ing strong hostile feelings. They try to get around it by attacking the U krainian Church. Lately much has been w ritten in our press, and in this magazine about the wave of religious per secution th a t is sweeping across Ukraine. There is little point in discussing well-known facts here. W hat we would like to point out is th a t after a genera tion has grown up knowing little else but Communism and being told th a t religion is a harm ful relic of the Middle Ages, the re gime still finds it necessary to continue the fig h t against both Church and religion. Again I come to you, for you are conscience and the law to me. Forgive the intrusion of this interview disturbing your sleep in eternity. Perhaps it is not a trivial m atter. See for yourself, how complex are the tim es: G reat upheavals, Old traditions shattered, Concepts of beauty redefined. E ternal flux — both cosmic and earthly. Only the graves are silent and still. Oh, how m any souls in the last century were maimed, made destitute and ill! The globe was spinning in bloody conflagration. No wonder some are seasick from it all. Dizzily swaying w ith every new notion, they sway on the deck of th e changing world.
