A Query to the Press ( 2 ) It is not our intention to par ticularly pick on the Time, or the Life magazines, and some news papers as well, which either through ignorance, or some bias against the U krainian national movement, m isrepresent or dis to rt the true facts about Ukraine and its liberty loving people. Our intention is to point out to them the errors of their ways, and set the record straight. This was done some tim e ago when some members of the Uk rainian National Women’s League of America, a nationally and internationally well known organization of m any years of great accomplishments here and abroad, sent a letter to the edit ors of the Time magazine per taining to an article which con fused Ukrainians w ith the Rus sians. In reply it received this epistle: “We are, of course, aware of the desire of the U krainians — especially those living in this country and Canada — to pre serve the concept of a free na tion. However, the facts of pres ent political life have led to the general use of ‘Russian’ to refer to all of the republics w ithin the USSR. This is due prim arily to Russia’s being the seat of gov ernm ent for this bloc.” We dislike to entertain the idea th a t the Time publishers agree w ith this letter, w ritten by one of its w riters. It is definite ly pernicious not only to U krain ians but to America as well. It is good Russian propaganda in using the term “bloc” of w hat? Of th a t “bloc” which is the Red Russian Bear, the greatest en emy our country has had to face in its entire history? Instead of bringing out the in disputable fact th a t the so-call ed Soviet Russia is composed of captive nations, each struggling to free itself of th a t bearlike hold, the Time falls for th a t So viet Russian propaganda, which T sarist Russian propagandists used to disseminate, the false idea of a “one and indivisible Russia.” Moreover, Ukrainians not only in America and Canada, but throughout the entire world as well are united as one in espous ing the cause of th eir kinsmen behind the iron curtain, who are enslaved and throttled there, un able to make known to the free world their plight and their fierce determ ination to regain all of th a t which is their own. Fortunately, there are certain sections of the American press which are glad to rectify any m isrepresentations, which they inadvertently m ay make, about Ukraine and Ukrainians. It is this press which is fair and just. Among them is the N. Y. H er ald Tribune. It is this great N.Y. m etropolitan daily which in the past published special articles re porting the tru th about the Uk rainian struggle for freedom, no tably a very prom inent one, w rit ten by Ansel Talbert, its m ilitary and aviation editor then, about the U krainian underground movement. Recently, however, it publish ed a cartoon showing a figure la beled “P etlura” following the banner of “political terro r,” in the company of Gestapo, G.P.U., etc. Now, P etlura was the head of the Ukrainian National Republic and commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian arm ies in 1919-1920, which fought desperately against Communist invasion of Ukraine. Petlura was assassinated by a Soviet agent in Paris in May, 1926. L etters of protest, including one by William Henry Chamber lin, author of a history of the Russian Revolution, flowed into the N. Y. Herald Tribune. Its re sponse was immediate, in form of an apology, and the printing of a num ber of the protest let ters, which gave biographical data about Petlura. In a letter to Mr. W alter Dush- nyck, the Tribune editor w rote: “. . . Please accept our apolo gies for including him (Petlura) in a cartoon depicting disciples of political terro r . . . I am, of course, convinced th a t Petlura was fighting for social justice and freedom. I feel sure it was ignorance on the p a rt of our car toon contributor, Mr. Behrendt of Am sterdam , th a t caused him to include P etlura with the oth er political terrorists. Perhaps he was deceived by th e propaganda concerning Jewish pogroms re ferred to in Mr. Bakum ’s let ter . . . (H arry M arsh, Editorial A ssistan t).” This Tribune incident is pur posely cited here as an example of w hat a well informed and un biased American press, living up to the best traditions and high est principles of American jour nalism, does to present the tru th and only the tru th in a clear, honest, and objective manner. Many more such examples could be cited here, if space perm itted. Perhaps, in time, this example m ay help to mend the ways of some press delinquents in the m atter of U kraine and U krain ians.
