26 WWW .UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 2019 UNWLA New Jersey Regional Council E lects N ew Execut ive Board by Natalia Pawlenko Delegates at NJ Regional Council Annual Meeting Early on a warm day this past May, the Clifton Holy Ascension Orthodox Church bustled with the arrival of women from the nine branches of the New Jersey Regional Council (N JRC) who gathered for their an- nual meeting and bian nual elections. As the thirty delegates settled into their places, old friends greeted each other and new acquaintances were made. Agenda packets were opened and the meeting, chaired by Elizabeth Buniak, c ommenced. NJRC outgoing president Marianna Livcha noted that the past two years were busy and fruitful. Some highlights included a 13% increase in NJRC membership over the past year and many other fund- raising and educational events, statewide, including t he christen ing of a new Branch 135 (Hazlet) named after the Ukrainian poetess Olena Teliha, the 30th anniversary celebration of Branch 98 (Holmdel/Mid- dletown), and the first ever Miss Ukrainian New Jersey pageant organized by Branch 137 (Clifton), which at tracted man y younger generation Ukrainian women. Social Welfare Chair Maria Vasylkiv reported that nearly $29,000 was donated council - wide to UNWLA causes over the past two years: the Adopt the Family of a Wounded Soldier/War Victim's Fund; the Pokrovsk or phanage; th e Babusia fund; summer and winter camps for orphans from eastern Ukraine; Sieverodonetsk Community Center and Church; Dz h erelo; Prostir Nadii and other causes and initiatives . Nadia Nynka, UNWLA 3rd Vice President responsible for Public Relatio ns, provide d an overview of the efforts underway in New Jersey and elsewhere in the United States to ensure that the Holodomor is appropriately recognized by state legislatures through the enactment of resolutions. She also reminded participants that a con ference on the Holodomor is scheduled to take place October 4 – 6 in Philadelphia Pa. In keeping with the resolution from the 2017 Convention to commemorate the Holodomor, Branch 75 held two community events featuring distinguished speakers Andrew Stutaffor d of the Na tional Review in 2017 and Lubomyr Luciuk of the Royal Military College of Canada in 2018. Both events were well at- tended and offered various perspectives on the Holodomor as well as ideas on how to more effectively commemorate and educate the pu blic in ord er to increase recognition of the Holodomor throughout the world. After interesting reports from the presidents of the nine branches of the NJRC, greetings from the UNWLA National Executive President Marianna Zajac, and reports of the standing committees (auditing, membership), participants eagerly awaited the list of nominations for the next two - year term of the NJRC executive. The results were unanimous and enthusiastic, and the following individuals were elected to lead the NJRC for 2019 – 2021 :
