UNWLA .ORG 17 Tsvitka is Andrij Cybyk’s br ainchild and includes several performing age groups of young - sters and teenagers; the dancers are an amazingly detailed and beautiful group to watch. They do var- ious regional dances, and the music and dances are authentic, as are their costumes, which refl ect the individual regional designs and patterns accu- rately and are custom made to their specifications in Ukraine. As a result, they are spectacularly beautiful and varied. R ecently, when a Lemko dance was added to their repertoire, one of the dancers’ mo ther spent several months at the Ukrainian Museum in NYC painstakingly re - searching and designing every detail before the costumes were ordered. Great care is taken with handl ing and cleaning of each of these costumes. Each dancer carefully carries his or hers in gar- ment bags (with name tags) and each is responsi- ble for knowing which dances will be performed that day and for bringing appropriate costumes for the day’s performan ce. The costumes are an ex- pensive investment, therefore, the Academy itself maint ains the care and cleaning of them for opti- mal and consistent appearance. Attitude and professionalism are instilled by the teacher and head of the Dance Academy. What makes T svitka so unique is the training style of Pan Andrij himself; this is a professio nal group, not just a community children’s dance troupe, and the students are made aware of that from the start. They are trained as professionals, lots of hard work and commi tment, but, they are also treated like professionals and are expected to act acco rdingly. Pan Andrij teaches not only dance movement but also mental discipline. He teaches his students that their professionalism is expected not only when they are in costum e but after the costume s come off as well. They represent not only Tsvitka and ou r diaspora, but most of all themselves, and this is ev- ident in how they conduct themselves off the stage. Their role model in all aspects of this is Pan Andrij himself, who is a joy to work with and is gracious in his thanks to the organizers and the audie nce for every performance and who never fails to praise his troupe for their work as well. That professionalism is very evident; often, as the dancers wait to go on stage, th ey use the waiting time to rehearse their dance steps (with or without Pan Andrij ) so they are in sync. Just before the performance, Pan Andrij dons a handsome soorochka and comes on stage. He does the intro- ductions and provides details of each dance (wher e it came from and what the steps represent) and ex- plains variations in costume d etails from region to region. As the dances begin, all pe ripheral activity of the day stops; people gather to enjoy the Pryvit and learn about the traditional presentation of bread and salt, watch the youngsters perform their cute dances, and then get pul led in by the lively music and clap and whoop and cheer (along with us Ukrainians) at the acrobatic steps of the Hopak. By the time Tsvitka finishes its performance, eve- ryone is already standing up and applauding the dancers. It NEVER fails to happen. Ther e is no doubt that there will be future great professional dancers coming out of this Academy. For now, they are true young pro fes- sional dancers, proudly preserving their her itage, receiving the rewards of their hard work and com- mitment. And they are lovi ngly guided in all of their endeavors by our true friend and consum- mate professional, Andrij Cybyk. Diakuiu Pane Andriju, we are forever grateful.
