14 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 2019 ASU Ukrainian Language Studies 2018 and 2019 By Christine Boyko Thanks to a generous $10,000 UNWLA donation, a successful second year of summer Ukrainian Studies has concluded at Arizona State Uni versity (ASU) at the Melikian Center in sunny Tempe, Ar- izona. This project started in 2017, as an initiative spearheaded by Patience and Jim Huntwork at the Melikian Cen- ter at ASU. Pa- tience is a member of the advisory board at the Melikian Center for Slavi c Studies, and she and her husband Jim were the first donors to sup- port this pro- gram. They in- formed me of what was hap- pening at ASU, and our UNWLA Branch 3 went into action. We started a fundraising campaign within our Ukrain- ian community in the greater Ph oenix area, and one of our members, Nadia Taft, immediately came to the rescue. Nadia, who was a Trustee for the late Mr. My kytyn’s trust fund generously do- nated $10,000, and thus we met our goal for the summer of 2018. I was involved in the interview pro cess for hiring the program professor, Olena Sivachenko. Our branch president’s daughter, Olenka Melnyk, participated in the course. The group had lots of fun learning to speak Ukrainian, and Professor Si- vachenko came to our church and was surprised to lea rn that there was a small but active Ukrainian community in Phoenix. Please read the explana- tion and watch the video about t he first - year class at https://asunow.asu.edu/20180711 - global - en- gagement - asu - adds - ukrainian - offerings - lan- guages - crucial - national - se curity. Additional funds to continue this program for the upcoming 2019 summer program were needed, so the Huntworks once a gain donated $5,000. I didn’t know how our small community could raise the huge sum of $10,000 that was re- quired, but when I approac hed the board members of our UNWLA Executive Committee, they whole- heartedly pledged the rest of the needed funds. Our 2019 g oals were met! Thanks to the UNWLA, we were able to continue this important effort to keep Ukrainian studies at ASU. The course ran from May 28 - July 12 2019. Classes were held Monday through Friday for four hours, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students rec eived 8 credits of SLC 194. As stated in the website information guide: “S tudents with no previous experience learn to un- derstand Ukrainian culture and to speak Ukrain- ian at the Novice High or In termediate Low level, preparing them to function in Ukraine.” As Professor Mark von Hagen noted, “ The Ukrainian language, like all the languages we teach at the Melikian Center’s Critical Language Insti- tute, is a gateway to a rich culture and dynamic so- cie ty.” Professor von Hagen, who was recently ap- pointed as interim director of the Melikian Center, a lso stated that “After two years of Russia’s war with Ukraine, the teaching of this language will also likely become a national security priority for the Unit ed States.” I urge readers to think about sending your students to take these courses. They don’t have to be students who don’t know Ukrainian; I was told that “heritage” speakers are welcome! There is no tuition, but there is a course administrative fee of $1,500 for the 7 - week intensive Ukrainian pro- gram, and this fee is identical for students who ➔
