28 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, БЕРЕЗЕНЬ 2019 Pani Tamara was beloved in our community for many reasons, not the least of which was her un- wavering willingness to support Ukrainian organizations and causes. We could count on her to donate to the church raffle for praznyk, to dazzle atte ndees with her gerdany display at the annual Montage of the Ukrainian Dancers of Miami, or to donate to the coffers of UNWLA Branch 17 in Miami. Karyn Maksymowich Wilk, Anna Maksymowich Lotocky and Donna Maksymowich - Waskiewicz recall the joy and anticipati on with which she invited them to carol at her home every Christmas. Pani Tamara wanted to be the first on their itinerary. They remember the sheer breadth of her talent — her beaded flowers, embroi- dered pillows, gerdany, clothing that she designed and made herself, her beautifully decorated home, and above all, her hospitality. Her joy was matched, if not exceeded by , their own. Pani Tamara’s resoluteness, her steadfastness, and her stoicism were remarkable. A woman from Donetsk , whose family managed to esc ape the Holodomor, she subsequently lost her son, her husband and her daughter in addition to the life passage losses of parents and siblings. “Now I have no one” she told me after her daughter Halyna’s passing, and yet our entire community mourns her loss . Surely that is having someone , or at least something. What I admired most about Pani Tamara was her refusal to be vanquished in spite of any sorrow. As the saying goes, she kept on keeping on — whether it was as part of the varenyky crew at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary parish, as a member of UNWLA Branch 17, or as the exercise instructor at Senior Week at Soyuzivka. Pani Tamara wouldn’t just show up — she participated. She came, she saw, she gave. For all of us, her l oss is incalculable. And it hur ts. She meant so much to so many of us. We can only hope she finds peace and eternal rest as she joins her beloved Frank, Orest and Halyna among the saints. We will miss her. May her memory be eternal. Photo courtesy of Zoryana Romankiv . Our Cover Our cover features a poster that features words taken from Taras Shevchenko’s Testament (Zapovit): “Bury me and arise, break your chains and let the blood of your enemies bapti z e freedom.” The work is attributed to Mykhailo Boichuk , whose school of monumental art produced two other great graphic artists: Ivan Padalka and Vasyl Sedliar. The style blends influences from the icon with naive art. The printer is identified as Dniprosoiuz .
