26 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, БЕРЕЗЕНЬ 2019 In Memoriam It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Ivanna (Jean) Holowaty on November 19, 2018. Ivanna was born to the Hryhorciw family in the small Hutsul town of Kociw in the Carpathian Mountains of Ukraine on March 4, 1924 , the daughter of Stephan Hryhorciw, a surveyor and entrepreneur, and his wife Maria Dumin, a teacher. Although an only child, Ivanna was born into a large and loving family of uncles, aunts and cousins. Her early years were innocent, peaceful and nurturing, but the political clima te of the re- gion was threatening. Unrest soon displaced the family to Poland where they experienced a loss of home and all worldly possessions. Schooling was now in Polish. The family moved to Poznan where Ivanna would meet her future husband, Michael O. H olowaty. More political unrest and war efforts forced Ivanna to seek education in Berlin where German was the primary language in school but where learning the French language as well was mandatory. She studied and excelled, but WWII intruded and interrupt ed these endeavors. Ivanna was now a young adult and a Ukrainian patriot and so an enemy of the Nazi state. As a result, she was arrested and served nearly two years in Ravens- brück, a multinational concen tration camp for women. Michael Holowaty found her soon after her release, and they married. Education was highly valued and little by little Ivanna and Michael both earned degrees. Two children were born while they were in dis- placed persons camps in Germany. A kind Baptist church community in Northern Mic higan spon- sored the family to come to the United States. The rest, as they say, is history. Ivanna earned creden- tials as an ASCP, a laboratory technologist, and ul- timately became head of a hospital school in Gary, Indiana. She had two more children. Ivan na was devoted to her Ukrainian her- itage, her Ukrainian Catholic Church and her fam- ily, and to the love of her adopted country of Amer- ica. In her later years she was devoted to the causes of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America and served as pr esident of UNWLA branches for 5 years (each) in Munster, Indiana, and in Venice, Florida . Ivanna was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Michael O. Holowaty, and is survived by her children Christine Schlesinger, Marta Garcia, Alexandra Hildebrand and George Holowaty, by eight grandchildren, and by seven great - grand chil- dren. During her lifetime, Ivanna ex perienced the innovations of electricity, automobiles, cinema, telephones, television, airplanes and the inter- net. She also knew the Great Depression and WWII in the European theater. Through it all, she was positive, resilient and a beautiful person. Those who knew her describe her as “a force of na- ture,” elegant, gracious, devout, and generous, but above all grateful for the bounty of her life. She would often be heard saying: “What a life, what a life, what a wonderful life!” In lieu of flowers, the family requests do- nations be made to the UNWLA in Ivanna’s memory. Checks should be made out to UN- WLA Branch 56 with Jean Holowaty in the memo section and mailed to Bohdanna Puzyk, 664 Clear Creek Dr., Osprey, FL 34229. Donations are ear- marked to help the Ukrainian veterans of the war in Donbas against the Russian incursion. ― Lesia Popel, UNWLA Branch 56 president Our Life Contact Information Address changes, delivery and subscriptions: office@unwla.org Submitting articles, photos and other materials to editors: unwlaoutlife@gmail.com
