“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИПЕНЬ-СЕРПЕНЬ 2014 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 17 Saturday, May 24, 2014 The Convention’s opening ceremony on Saturday morning was a celebratory and colorful affair, thanks to the beautiful embroidered attire worn by all participants and such traditional UNWLA rituals as the singing of the Ukrainian and American national anthems and the lighting of candles at the UNWLA Tree of Life. After UN- WLA President Marianna Zajac officially opened the convention, the delegates began the business of electing convention officers, approving candi- dates for the resolutions and bylaws committees, and hearing reports of the UNWLA Treasurer and members of the Auditing Committee. While there was some discussion about financial issues, what seemed to spark the greatest interest—or rather concern—was a brief speech by Oxana Farion, Auditing Committee Chair and Honorary Member of the UNWLA. In response to her call to pay greater attention to the problems of UNWLA membership, a number of Soyuzianky asked questions and were ready to voice their opinions on this matter. Alas, for lack of time, this crucial conversation had to be postponed. After a moving luncheon program dedi- cated to the Maidan, the most important order of business at the afternoon plenary session was electing the UNWLA National Board for the next three-year term. The vote was unanimous, and many outgoing National Board officers were reelected for another term, including, first and foremost, President Marianna Zajac (the full slate of elected officers is listed on p. 12). For the convention banquet that evening, Soyuzianky were joined by many UNWLA sup- porters and guests. Emceed by Roksolana Misilo, the newly elected 4th Vice President for Public Relations, the event featured an address by the reelected UNWLA President Marianna Zajac (please see the English text on pp. 13-15), an en- joyable musical program by highly acclaimed bass baritone Stefan Szkafarowsky, and the conferring of special titles and awards on a number of UN- WLA members, supporters, and partners. Besides the traditional Honorary UNWLA Membership, which this year was bestowed upon nine deserv- ing women (please see the full list on p. 5), Presi- dent Marianna Zajac presented the UNWLA’s first Humanitarian Award to Dr. Gennadiy Fuzaylov, President of the non-profit organization “Doctors Collaborating to Help Children” and a valuable partner of the UNWLA in several of its social wel- fare projects. The second award went to Dr. Fu- zaylov’s colleague, surgeon Dr. Daniel Driscoll, who has been instrumental in providing treat- ment to young Ukrainian burn victims both at Shriners Hospital in Boston and in Ukraine. The UNWLA also honored several of its financial partners for their generous support: Self Reliance New York Federal Credit Union, the Ukrainian National Federal Credit Union, and the SUMA Federal Credit Union. That evening, the UNWLA received a special award of its own: President of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Or- ganizations Orysia Sushko presented UNWLA President Marianna Zajac with the WFUWO’s first Princess Olha Award—as a sign of recogni- tion of the UNWLA’s valuable work by and on be- half of women. Sunday, May 25, 2014 After an uplifting Divine Liturgy which in- cluded a stirring homily by Bishop Borys Gudziak and the singing by an impromptu choir made up of convention delegates and guests, Soyuzianky gathered for the morning plenary session. The latter began with a detailed explanation of various legal issues and procedures by UNWLA Parlia- mentarian Oksana Xenos and a discussion of amendments to the UNWLA bylaws. However, the greatest highlight of that morning was un- doubtedly the presentation by Dr. Gennadiy Fu- zaylov; the slides which pictured his young Ukrainian patients who had suffered serious burn injuries and were brought in for advanced treat- ment to the United States (with assistance from the UNWLA) left most of the audience stunned and at the same time deeply grateful to Dr. Fu- zaylov and his dedicated colleagues. A very full afternoon session included, among other things, a detailed report by the UN- WLA Scholarship Program Chair Maria Polan- skyj, followed by a lively discussion; presentation of certificates of appreciation to UNWLA mem- bers and branches for various aspects of their dedicated work within the organization; and a special, in-depth report by Dr. Martha Bohachev- sky-Chomiak and Halyna Teslyuk on the func- tioning of the UNWLA’s recently inaugurated Women’s Studies Lectureship at the Ukrainian Catholic University in L’viv. The wide variety of courses and open seminars which the Lectureship had made available to UCU students and the pub- lic in the past year and the keen interest which these academic offerings have generated at UCU testify to the success of this UNWLA program. 2014 marks 70 years since the publication of the very first issue of Our Life . In celebration of this remarkable milestone, Branch 56 members of North Port, FL, under the direction of outgoing
