The annual meeting of the Philadelphia Regional Council took place at the Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center on September 8 th . Oxana Farion opened the meeting with a prayer and moment of silence for the r e- cently deceased Soyuzianky . Ms. Buczkowski , past president, congrat u- lated the Council member s on a successful year marking 75 yea rs since the Council's inception in 1938. She cited several noteworthy events of this past year: the gala anniversary celebration held on June 9, 2013, and the publicati on of the jubilee book , complete with photos and articles about the 14 branches that make up the Philadelphia R e- gional Council. Other highlights mentioned were “Den Soyuzianky ” held on September 25, 2012, and the excursion to the Pearl Buck House to view B ranch 88’s aw ard - winning Christmas decor a- tions on December 1, 2012. After a short question and answer period about the various reports given, the Soyuzianky shared their views on the topic “How to be a Ukrainian woma n in America and the role of the UNWLA as an organization.” Responses were gi v- en representing t he four groups which make up the UNWLA at the present time according to Ms. Farion: seniors, those born in the United States, m embers of the Fourth Wave , and others repr e- senting two generations. The g roups have diffe r- ent needs and some come from different bac k- grounds, but they all share a common mission. A lively exchange of ideas ensued. Many Soyuzian - ky spoke about their pers onal reasons for joining the UNWLA , what benefits their membership has broug ht them, what they have been able to co n- tri bute, and what direction they think the organ i zation should take in the future. Some differences of opi n- ion surfaced during the discussion of the UNWLA's potential development into a fully bilingual ( English and U krainian ) organiz a- tion .
