“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТОПАД 201 3 WWW. UNWLA.ORG 19 what w as happening. That one took away my va l- uable books; another one took some other pric e- less item; this one rummaged in a desk for som e- thing she simply had to have to remember me by; those were conferring how to divide up this and that between them; and othe rs were scheming, wondering how they could come away with som e- thing without drawing any attention to the m- selves. Everyone hurried and gloated, and all were grateful to me that I had left them exactly what was most appropriate. I felt truly blessed. With e very passing moment, I was feeling better and better – and I was reconciled to my death. Good. This was probably my best deed. Finally, all the rooms were emptied. Had I not done the right thing by dying? The guests were preparing to leave, carefully holdi ng on to whatever keepsake or treasure they had inherited from me. Was there nothing left? After a moment, a voice, that seemed to be calling for order, r e- plied: “ Nothing .” And all eyes turned for the last time to search greedily all the rooms and nooks. Was there truly nothing left? “Nothing,” a voice replied once again. Then I glanced all around to see if ever y- thing had gone as it should have. Had anyone been short - changed? Good. They had forgotten nothing. They had taken it all, removed everything, m ade a clean sweep – the emptiness gleamed. Only a tiny ray of sunlight, like a single thread of the most precious gold, crept into my study and sank timidly into a corner. It was pointing to something. My weary gaze dragged itself there. What had been left b ehind? Something remained there. I drew nearer and peered into the corner. They had left it! Without so much as touching it! My cross ! The cross that I bore all my life, suffering and falling under it; it remained here now, u n- touched by anyone, forgotten – and it waited... And I waited along with it. Would none of those who had been here return to take it away from me? No one returned . All around me it was quiet...very quiet – and I was le f t all alone with my cross. All alone – and a tiny ray of sunlight. I felt truly blessed... Nusha Macielinski, Vice President for Membership and Organizational Affairs, thoroug h- ly presented the responsibilities of branch me m- bers and the Regional Councils. This included “d u- ties” of UNWLA members as listed in the bylaws, as well as additional “responsibilities” of members to their branches and to the organization, not spe c- ified in the bylaws . She distributed the organiz a- tional chart of the UNWLA and bilingual handouts related to member responsibilities. As part of her presentation, she held a very interesting and e n- joyable breakout session where attendees were d i- vided into four groups and assigned to discuss their perspectives on the responsibilities which the organization leadership has towards its members. The group with the most responses selected “pri z- es” brought by Nusha. There was much interesting discussion during this pre sentation. Financial secretary Roma Shuhan very clearly stated the financial responsibilities of the Branches and Regions, and the far - reaching impl i- cations if these were not met. In her introduction she listed and e x- plained all designated UNWLA Funds. She then very clearly explained EIN numbers and stressed the importance of filing the e - postcard annually, which is a necessary step for the maintenance of the organization’s non - profit status. Roma also provided instructions to new Branch and Regional Cou ncil representatives on how to file the e - postcard on the Internet. She answered questions knowingly and clearly. Roma stressed the importance of paying annual branch dues on time. She also reminded attendees how to fill out Financial Reports acc u- rately a nd with complete data. Many attendees expressed satisfaction with the meeting, which concluded with a delightful lunch prepared primarily by Executive Committee Member - at - Large Marijka Andriyovych.
