“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТОПАД 201 3 WWW. UNWLA.ORG 13 (l - r) Sofijka Zielyk (WFUWO), Prof. Olena Hankivsky, Dr. Marta Kebalo, Prof. Mar ian Rub chak Women’s Organizations (WFUWO) to the United Nations/ECOSOC , introduced Prof. Hankivsky. The WFUWO, joined by the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America and the Ukrainian Museum, was an event sponsor, and provided support to Prof. Hankivsky for the publication of this book. Prof. Hankivsky is the great - grand - daughter of Olena Kysilewsky, prominent activist of the Ukrainian women’s movement of Western Ukraine during the interwar period, and the first president of the WFUWO. She is also th e gran d- daughter of Hania Anna Hankivsky, a past trea s- urer of the WFUWO. Dr. Kebalo read a greeting from WFUWO President Orysia Sushko who wrote that “at the core of the mission of the WFUWO is to uphold the dignity and integrity of women both in Ukraine a nd in Ukraine’s émigré communities.” Gender equality issues are rooted in dignity and integrity , as well as in the power to achieve and sustain these socially, politically and economica l- ly, noted Dr. Kebalo. The book Gender, Politics and Society in Ukraine, which was published by the University of Toronto Press in 2012 and is going into a s e- cond printing, is available through Amazon in hardcover, paperback and Kindle versions. Ire ne Jarosewich is the WFUWO Main Repres entative to the United Nations DPI/NGO “The Future of the UNWLA Is in Our Hands” Dear Soyuzianky , These are the words cho sen by the Convention Committee as the motto for the XXX Conventio n of the UNWLA, which, as you remember , will take place in Tarrytown, New York , on May 23 - 26, 2014. It is already November. The holidays are upon us and we shall all be involved in preparation for family gatherings. As Soyuzianky , we are very fortunate. We have our immediate family circle and we also belong to a wider family circle composed of our UNWLA friends and colleagues. At this time I would like to share with you a recipe for you to prepare for your UNWLA family. This recipe is good for any time of year. UNWLA Borsch Take one large p ot. Mix t ogether assorted sizes, shapes and temperaments of Ukrainian women. Add causes, missions and saving Ukraine gradually with care. Sprinkle on dreams, encouragement, p a- tience, honesty and pride. Stir in work, friends, organizational duties, such as writing reports, attending meetings, conferences, conventions, paying dues, sponsoring students, feeding the you ng, comforting the aged, support ing the sick, and most importantly finding ways of making money to do all this. Don’t fo r- get some fun and pleasu re, like picnics, embroidery dances, exhibits of everything Ukrainian, anywhere and everywhere, baking and cooking (no Ukrainian event may be held without supplying food). Pour in many compliments, thanks , and add a pinch of patience. Mi x in hramoty , honorary membership , visits from the Pr esident or other VIP’s. Add a lar ge scoop of luck and an abundance of energy. Keep blending constantly with all the other ingredients. Bring to a boil — then simmer for 85 or more years over a very moderate flame. If t he borsch b e- comes too thick turn heat off. UNWLA borsch can turn unpredi ctable at times. UNWLA borsch is orig i- nal and need s generous amo unts of imagination, fortitude and tolerance to keep from turning rancid. The magic of this incredible borsch is that a fter 88 years the aroma still lingers and the pot never em p- ties, although the flavor may vary depending on taste, preference , and seas onings! IT IS ALL IN OUR HANDS. Bon a ppé tit ! May the holidays of Thanksgiving and the Birth of Christ bring you and yours health, happiness , and peace. May the good Lord bestow His blessings upon your family and the UNWLA fam ily now and throughout all time! Lidia Bilous , Convention Public Relations Chair
