24 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, СІЧЕНЬ 2011 A TENTH ANNIVERSARY FOR UNWLA BRANCH 115 In January 2000, Mrs. Lida Kolodchin brought together several Ukrainian women fro m the metro Detroit area for the purpose of rejuvenating and revitalizing Branch 115, patroness Lina Kostenko. Dr. Nadia Juzych was elected first president of the reorganized branch. The new vice presidents were Lily Litynskyj and Genevieve Murskyj; Katya Beswerchij was elected treasurer and Elizabeth Kuczer was elected to serve as the branch secretary. Because many of us were mothers with young children, the new group wanted to focus on familiarizing kids with Ukrainian traditions and crafts. Our initial c ommunity endeavor was a Pysanka Workshop for Children, a workshop that continues to be held annually on Palm Sunday. Subsequently, we organized Summer Art Camps for Children, which focused on learning Ukrainian crafts. In 2001, to commemorate the 15th ann iversary of the Chornobyl nuclear disaster, Branch 115 members, assisted by local artist Roman Seniuk, designed a commemorative pysanka; sales of the dozen designer pysanky benefited the UNWLA Victims of Chornobyl Fund. Other fundraisers/activities include the publication of a cookbook “In the Kitchen with Branch 115,” (See “ Smachnoho from Detroit Branch 115, ” OL October - November 2008 issue, page 33), library cultural displays, bake sales, a Ladies Night Out shopping event, a Bulka Bake - Off, and social welf are awareness — volunteering at holiday luncheons and ongoing magazine donations for elderly residents at the Ukrainian Village Apartments in Warren, M ichigan. Br. 115 gives annually to Our Life’s Press Fund, the UNWLA Scholarship Program, and The Ukrainian Museum. We appreciate our Board members and Committee Chairs who truly make everything run smoothly. A special thank you to two Board members who have served the longest in their respective posts: Treasurer Annie Buhay (since 2002) and Secretary Lesia Bold e (since 2004). We currently have 26 active members, three of whom serve as Committee Chairs on the Detroit Regional Council. On a sunny autumn Sunday, October 10, 2010, UNWLA Branch 115, Detroit Region, celeb - rated its Tenth Anniversary at the CYA Domiv ka in Warren, Michigan. This milestone marked a completion of ten years of continuity for Br. 115 since its original founding in 1980. Observing our 10th on 10/10/10 provided an air of added joie de vivre for branch members and the Anniversary Planning Com mittee: Chairperson Diane Zurkiw - skyj, Elizabeth Kuczer, Natalya Lewyckyj, Natalka Maruszczak, Gloria Pryjma, and Ann Marie Rud - nycky. Soyuzianky from all 11 Detroit - area branches shared in the celebration, which included a program of congratulatory greet ings, fond memories, a luncheon buffet, and entertainment. Br. 115 Vice President and Master of Ceremonies Natalka Maruszczak graciously opened the festivities and invited all those attending to recite the CYA prayer and sing the CYA hymn. Elizabeth Kuczer , current Br. 115 president, welcomed guests and presented a brief history of the branch’s pursuits and interests. Lida Kolodchin, Honorary President of the Detroit Regional Council, Honorary Member of the UNWLA, and Honorary Member of Soyuz Ukrainok of U kraine, gave a special Jubilee greeting and recounted how, early on, she was encouraged and inspired by the branch leadership and branch cohesiveness to move forward. Next on the agenda was the reading of a warm letter of congratulations and a hramota (cer tificate of appreciation) from UNWLA National President Marianna Zajac. As Branch 115’s anniversary event coincided with the National Board Meeting in NYC, Detroit Regional Council President Lydia Jachnycky was unable to attend, but her greeting and certi ficate of recognition were presented by Natalia Hewko (Br. 45) and Lydia Kazewych (Br. 96), in Ukrainian and English, respectively. Both Natalia and Lydia are former presidents of Detroit Regional Council. Representatives from other branches then had the o pportunity to express their good wishes, and this segment of the program culminated with singing Mnohaya Lita and a champagne toast offered by Natalia Hewko, with beverages served by husbands of Br. 115 members, namely Eliot Bolde, Ihor Kuczer, and B ohdan Pryjma. Throughout the meal two DVDs were shown. Expertly produced by Gloria Pryjma, the first featured a gallery of photos of Br. 115 members; the second featured highlights from the 2008 UNWLA National Convention, which was Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
