So will we.” At the end of the plenary session, presidents of the Branches-at-Large or their representatives met to elect their liaison for the new three-year term. Ulana Hlynsky was re-elected and will continue to serve in this position on the new National Board. Luncheon Sunday’s luncheon program opened with Journey through Ukraine, featuring songs and poetry reci tations performed by the children of three pre schools sponsored by Branches 53, 76, and 96, and students from Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic School in Warren. The role of Ukraine was played by Tanya Bedrus, with Lesia Cherstylo accompanying the performers on the piano. The program was developed by Myroslava Baranyk and produced with the assistance of the teaching staff. The musical segment of the program also featured songs performed by soloist Olga Yalovenko, accom panied by Halyna Yalovenko on the piano. Master of Ceremonies during the luncheon was Lydia Kazewych, former president of the Detroit Regional Council. The luncheon included another traditional feature of UNWLA conventions—presenting recognition awards to Regional Councils and Branches for meritorious service to the organization or for outstanding support for UNWLA programs. The awards were presented by Honorary President Iryna Kurowyckyj and Honorary Member Marta Danyluk. A special citation was presented to Christine Boyko, Branch 3, for her role in orga nizing all Ukrainian programs and events held in Phoenix, Arizona, over the last 20 years. Also honored for his exemplary service to the UNWLA was Jaroslaw Kurowyckyj, cited for his good- natured, patient, and visible support of the UNWLA and its president. Concluding the luncheon program, Vice President for Culture Sophia K. Hewryk announced the winners of the Kovaliv Award for Literature. First prize was awarded to Oksana Zabuzhko for Notre Dame. Second Prize winner was Vasyl Makhno for Cornelia Street Cafe. Seminars Concurrently scheduled for 2:30 P.M. through 4:00 P.M. were the seminars of the Scholarship/Student Sponsorship Program chaired by Maria Polanskyj and the Press/Our Life Seminar. Topics addressed during the Scholarship seminar were presented by Maria Polanskyj, who provided an overview of the program from its inception through 2007; M. Orysia Jacus, who spoke about program finances; Daria Nowakiwska Lissy, who spoke about the import ance of endowment, memorial, and matching funds; Handzia Sawycka Mycak, who provided a history of the work of Dr. Theodozia Sawycka, program chair from 1971 through 1981; Anna Krawczuk, who spoke about the work of the program during her years as program chair (1981 through 1993); and Luba Bilowchtchuk, who discussed the work ac complished during her tenure as program chair (1993 through 2002). The program recently cele brated its 40th anniversary. During the Press I Our Life seminar, Ukrainian-language editor Irena Chaban spoke about the role of press chairs of Branches and Regional Councils and their responsibility of sending reports about their activities to Our Life for publication and discussed the nature of her colla borative work with authors. English-language editor Tamara Stadnychenko provided a brief overview of Our Life from the 1950s to the present, discussed her work with authors contributing articles to the magazine, and invited all those attending the seminar to submit short descriptions about their Wow experiences at the convention. Concurrently scheduled for 4:00 p.m. through 5:30 p.m. were the Social Welfare seminar and the Art/Museum Seminar. Presenters at the Social Welfare seminar were Irene Rypczuk D’Alessio and Oksana Lopatynsky, with each addressing different aspects of one theme—Caring for One Another: Developing a Volunteer Program to assist frail, sick, and homebound UNWLA members. The presenters focused on how to start a volunteer program, training volunteers, keeping volunteers motivated, and the benefits of volun teering. Ulana Kobzar, Art/Museum Committee Chair chose to develop her presentation around the theme of Women’s History Month and emphasized the importance of recording the artistic and cultural contributions made by Ukrainian women in our
