Headquarters News O ur ancestors, th e ancient Slavs, like th e A nglo-Saxons, di vided th e year into tw o p a rts — w in ter and sum m er. T h a t is w hy, in old folk ballads and fa iry tales, w in ter fig h ts n o t spring, b u t sum m er. T his is also w hy it is th a t on “S trite n n ia” (a holy day, Feb. 15) w in ter and sum m er m eet to change places. Only m uch la te r did th e Slavs begin to divide th e y ear into cam e fascin ated w ith a young actress, C atherine Piunova. His serious love fo r h er w as not re ciprocated and once again he be came disillusioned. On g ettin g th e p erm it to leave, he w ent to Moscow to be reun ited w ith his fa ith fu l friend, th e P rincess R epnin. T his m eeting stirre d stro n g em otions in his h e a rt — and although he recognized th a t these could tu rn to tru e love, he also realized th a t by now he had become a p rem atu rely aged and broken m an, while th e P rincess seem ed to be younger th a n ever. R etu rn in g to U kraine, S hev chenko w anted to m arry and have a home. H e w anted to m a r ry his b ro th e r’s serv an t girl, K h ary ta, b u t th e fam ily and th e g irl w ere opposed. T hen he w anted to m arry a U krainian serf — L ik eria Polusm akova — a serv an t in th e hom e of P e te rs b u rg friends, b u t he soon cam e to th e conclusion th a t he had n o t fallen in love w ith her, b u t w ith an im ag inary ideal. Shevchenko died, a bachelor, on his b irth d ay , M arch 9, 1861 and w as buried by th e D nieper R iver. Only his O xana could n o t be buried beside him . B ut m il lions of “O xanas” have since been reared in th e noble w ords of T aras Shevchenko — full of g re a t and m ig h ty feeling, a feel ing of g re a t love fo r beauty, freedom , tru th and love. W ith th e com ing of spring, our concerted effo rts can renew th is im age in th e UNW LA. A pril: The head lib rarian , of A m erican descent from th e P a r m a L ib rary gave a book review of John K olasky’s “Two Y ears in Soviet U kraine.” M ay: K its consisting of in stru ctio n fo r U krainian em broi dery and m aterials w ere given to m em bers to encourage th e a rt and adopt it to th e ir m odern dress. Ju n e: W e particip ated in “U n der One F lag ” festival a t th e M ay Company, selling tra d itio n al foods and U k rain ian articles. O ctober: O ur branch w as rep resented by Jennie B ochar and M ary F edak a t an O ctoberfest Book C arnival. D isplayed w ere pysanky, em broidery, ceram ics, wood carvings and o th er item s. N ovem ber: F o r th e p ast m onths th e m em bers w ere busy m aking pine cone w reaths, C hristm as stockings, N ativ ity scenes, and m any o th er articles, fo r th e C hristm as B azaar w hich was held in Decem ber by th e com bined UNW LA branches. Besides all th is our branch has contributed to th e H arv ard C hair Studies, donated books to th e C atholic and P ro te sta n t school libraries. W e also gave a two y ear subscription of th e “F orum ,” a fine U krainian pu b lication in E nglish to th e P arm a L ibrary. W e urged th e m em bers to w rite th eir Congressm en and Senators p ro ttestin g atro cities in U kraine. Mrs. Mary Fedak Pres.
