H e w as b o rn in th e P o lta v a re gion in a cossack villag e of C hor- n u k h y . H is p a re n ts , a lth o u g h poor, w ere still fre e cossacks. H e conducted d iscu ssio n s w ith th e m an d ta u g h t th e m to th in k . H e w as w ell know n an d e v e ry one considered it a n h o n o r to w elcom e h im in to th e ir hom es.
