Should We Close Our Eyes? A m erican society is vitally concerned w ith th e in terracial problem . R iots in A m erican ci ties, th e Poor People’s M arch, and th e m u rder of D r. M artin L u th er K ing have deeply a ffe c t ed all freedom -loving A m ericans. The recent events are w ritten up in th e press and discussed widely in th e hope th a t som e w orkable solution m ay be found to th is u rg en t problem . The A m erican governm ent has m ade th e fig h t ag ain st poverty its p rim ary concern and P resi dent Johnson stated recently: “The only w ar we would like to fig h t is th e w ar on p o v erty.” B ut these effo rts dem and a long tim e before th ey can b ear fru it, w hile th e V ietnam w ar continues to slow th em down considerably. M eanwhile th e racial problem continues to grow. I t is ag g ra vated by th e economic g row th and th e gap betw een th e a g ri cultural S outh and th e in d u strial n o rth ern states. L et us exam ine th e problem m ore closely. The N egro population has a h ig h er b irth ra te th a n th e w hite. In th e sou thern sta te s in d u stry is poor ly developed and w ork is h ard to come by. Consequently, m any N egroes m ig rate to th e n o rth ern states w here job opportunities are g reater. The new com ers from th e South are poorly edu cated. E m ployers dem and skilled w orkers and th e so uthern N e groes, unable to find work, crowd th e slum s of th e city to overflow ing. A nd poverty breeds crim e. Crim e affects th e life of every A m erican. R ecent fig ures show a forcible rape every 26 m in utes, a robbery every 5 m inutes, an agg rav ated assau lt every 3 m inutes, a car th e ft every m in ute, a burglary every 28 seconds. T his sta te of a ffa irs is h ig h ly alarm ing. W e no longer have any assurance about th e safety of our lives or pro perty , and we have every reason to fe a r fo r th e fu tu re of our children. F ear is an ever-present facto r in our think in g. T herefore, A m erican society searches fo r a solution. O rganizations sponsor forum s and panel discussions, new spapers conduct interview s, schools p resen t educational de bates. T here is an u rg e n t need fo r a g re a te r u n d erstan ding of th is problem . W e are one of th e ethnic groups w hich com prise A m eri can society. O ften we h ea r com plaints th a t we are no t in te r ested in th e N egro problem and th a t we, in fact, consider it alien to our in terests. B u t it is n ot so. The U krainian people know th e m eaning of s la v e ry ; even today th ey continue th e ir stru g g le fo r basic hum an rig h ts denied th em in th e ir own native land by a foreign regim e. W e need only join w ith th e re s t of our fellow A m ericans in a concerted action to find a solution to th is u rg en t problem . The N ational W om en’s Council of th e U. S. and th e G eneral F ed eratio n of W om en’s Clubs have set a w or th y exam ple by encouraging th e ir m em bers to j oin in th e cru sade fo r racial equality. T heir excellent w orking prog ram can be utilized by all in terested w om en’s clubs and societies. L et us not close our eyes to th e problem s around us.
