I f sh e is so em bued w ith th e S oviet idea o f com m unal livin g th a t “th e S ta te in sists on so th a t it m ay serve th e in terests o f th e p eop le,” w h y does sh e n ot sh are com m unally a t lea st one o f th e k itch en s in an y one o f h er th ree h om es? T he su m m er one on th e n orth sh ore o f th e B lack Sea, th e cou n try hom e n ear a lake ou tsid e of M oscow , or w h en w in ter blow s, and R u ssia ’s black w olves are still too near, h er oth er com fortab le hom e, th is one under th e p rotectin g sh adow s, fo r her, of th e K rem lin w alls. H er p rivacy h as n ot b een invad ed. “T he q uestion o f p ossib le con flic ts b etw een in terests o f h er fa m ily and th o se o f th e S ta te sound s stran ge to a S oviet w o m an .” W ith th is in m ind w h y does M rs. K hrush ch ev n ot tak e h er “stretch ” as an exam ple to S oviet w om en, o f clean in g th e citie s’ streets, clim b ing a te rri fy in g ladder up to a roof top, on h er back a load o f b rick s sup ported b y a can vas band across h er foreh ead , or an y o f th e rest o f th e aw fu l th in g s dem anded of w om en C om m un ists? A nd h ow can sh e th in k th e broken bodies o f su ch w om en ju stifie s th e end — th e S oviet S ta te? N ow h ere in th e U S S R are th e com m on people, th e w orkin g class allow ed p rivate lives. A nd p rivacy is a b asic u niversal law . W ith w h at ignorance does U SSR p resu m e to replace our C reator’s law s? N eith er is such a one in C hi na. T here is none in th e lon g queue of sh am e-faced m arried couples w a itin g each w eek fo r th eir ob ligatory p erm it to spend th e n ig h t to g eth er to produce a n ew gen eration for th e S oviet S tate. In b itter sorrow fo r th eir coun trym en, and foreb od in g for th em selves, th e th ro n g s in H ong K ong view th is horror in life in p rocess, a sto n e’s th row aw ay, along th e tw o banks o f th e tin y estu ary to th e north. T h e fu ry of th is n ew gen eration , w h en it learn s o f th e con scrip ted n atu re of its origin, w ill be F ran k en stein . R ob ots! S oviet R u ssia ’s F irst L ady reply, and th a t is w h a t it is, n ot a letter h as appalled and sadden ed m y sp irit. P erhap s it is a good th in g sh e had a chance to voice som e sh adow y Som eone’s view s. It m a y be an ob ject les son to us to n ever again g iv e a S oviet a chance to ex to ll w h at th ey consider th eir virtu es, so as to m ake us appear sh abb y. Our m otto should be: “L isten and observe. N ever inquire.
