M U SIA This year, into th e intellectual world, th ere moves again th e b irth d ay of a b rig h t star. It is M a ria B a s h k irts e v th e centenary of M aria B ashk i r tsev, a talented painter, born in 1860 in U kraine. H er life w as a sh o rt dream of fam e and achievem ent. She sta rte d to study in P aris, w here she lived w ith h er m other. P a in t ing was th en considered a fa sh ionable pastim e in th e society w here th e B ash k irtsev fam ily lived. T his young girl how ever took h er a r t serio u sly ; and exhi bited paintings, w hich won h er w arm public opinion as well as im p o rtan t and favorable com m ent from th e a r t critics. B ut h er aspirations exceeded h er stren g th . “M usia” — h e r p et nam e in th e fam ily — attack ed by tuberculosis, grew w eaker and w eaker. A lthough surround ed by loving care, she could not w ork any m ore on h er beloved p ainting. Then she resum ed w ork on h er diary, w hich becam e one of th e m ost in tere stin g confes sions of an a r tis t’s life. W hen she finally died, a t th e age of 24, she was a prom inent fig u re of h e r tim e. The L itera ry C ontest of th e W FUW O b ro u g h t also a biogra phical sketch of M aria B ashkir tsev. Sofia N aum ovich, a ta le n t ed U krainian jo u rn alist, living in P aris, p o rtray ed h er genius as revealed in h er diary. T he m ile stones of her painting, her love for th e renow ned F rench p a in t er, B astien Lepage, and h er p re m atu re death are described w ith talent. U R A IN IA N W O M E N ’S V O L L E Y B A L L T EA M T here are 6 U krainian Volley ball Team s in th e eastern p a rt of th e U. S. The P hiladelphia group led until recently. D uring th ree years it held firs t place in th e tournam ents. The six girls, under th e ir captain M rs. L ubom yra Si- letsky, becam e a known and re cognized sports unit. In Decem ber, 1960 th e U krainian N ational W om en’s League founded an aw ard, which was prom ptly won by th is team . B ut th ey did not enjoy it fo r long. The n ext to u r nam ent, in M arch, 1961 held in Passaic, N. J., b ro u g h t a new w inner. The UNW LA aw ard was gained by the U krainian W om en’s Volleyball team from New H aven, Conn. The victorious team , under its captain M rs. E u genie H ruzynova is very prom is ing.
