T he U k rain ian com m u n ity paid a sp ecial ac kn ow led gem en t to th is even t. T he value and stren g th o f U N W L A g o t a n ew m eanin g. Its road seem ed clear and evid en t. It proved itse lf quickly. D u rin g th e 1960-61 season fou r n ew B ran ch es w ere form ed. In P aw tu ck et, R . I., (B ran ch 2 5 ), in C hicago, 111. (B ran ch 2 9 ), in B ristol, P a. (B ran ch 3 2 ), and in W hippany, N . J. (B ran ch 6 1 ). F ou r C hapters started to w ork on th e principles o f U N W L A , attracted th rou gh th e sp irit o f fellow sh ip and love fo r our old U k rain ian h eritage. T his a ffectio n w as evidenced in m an y w ays. T rad itional cu s tom s w ere d em onstrated , U k rain ian folk lore w as stu d ied. T he choirs a t th e U N W L A B ran ch es cu ltivated U k rain ian son gs. T he ex h ib it o f w om en p ain ters w as arranged in N ew Y ork; U k rain ian w om en actors w ere honored in D etro it and M in n eap olis; w om en w riters read excerp ts o f th eir w orks in C hic ago and P h iladelp hia. B u t th e g rea test plan o f th e year cam e w h en th e m on um ent o f our in com parable sin ger, th e p oetess L esya U k rainka, ordered b y th e U N W L A B ran ch es in C leveland, O hio w as com pleted b y th e sculp tor, M ichael C h ereshn iovsk y, and exh ib ited in N ew Y ork C ity to th e public. B esid e th is art a ctiv ity , th e B ran ch es fu rth er n urtured th e educational ab ility o f th e m other. E du cation al Sem inars w ere held in d ifferen t cen ters. F ou r D ay C enters for pre-school children are now op eratin g in C leveland, W ilm ington, P h ilad elp h ia and C hicago. A sp ecial program for ch ildren ’s m eetin g s w as w orked out, and sen t to all U N W L A B ran ch es. T he public relation s o f our B ran ch es w idened th is la st year. T w o o f our R egion al C ouncils, P h ilad elp hia and D etro it w ere a ffilia ted w ith th e F ed eration o f W om en’s C lubs in th ese cities. M any o f our B ran ch es becam e re lated to In ternation al In stitu tes, and took p art in fe stiv a ls or ex h ib its. T h e R egion al C ouncil o f N ew Y ork is now in con tact w ith th e N ation al In stitu te in N ew Y ork C ity. T he H om e E conom ic D epart m en t and th e U krainian h ou se k eep ers w ere m ost su ccessfu l in th eir search fo r gen u in e recipes. C ulinary sh ow s w ere arranged b efore h olid ays to d em on strate trad ition al m enus and special d ish es. F in ally a plan fo r a culi n ary sh ow w as w orked out, and sen t to all U N W L A B ran ch es. T he w elfare action o f U N W L A w as directed, as in p reviou s years, tow ard s h elp in g th e ch il dren of th e D P ’s in G erm any and A u stria. E ig h teen D ay C enters w ere supported b y th e U N W L A B ranches. B esid e th a t th e “G randm a-A ction,” a m on th ly d onation for lonely old U k rain ian w om en in E urope rose to th e num ber of tw en ty. B u t n ew and d ifferen t sym p tom s in th e U S A called our a tten tion to th e need s o f our ow n com m u n ity; and a sp ecial con feren ce w as de d icated to th is concern. T hu s w as th e w ay and th e w ork o f U N W L A C h apters in th is b u sin ess year. T heir stren g th is grow in g, th eir h ori zons are w id en in g. A nd, m ost im p ortan t th ey are w illin g to learn and to search . F or th e tim e is seriou s, and ev ery spark of good w ill is needed in th e stru g g le o f th e F ree W orld. D N IE P E R C U L T U R E 5000 Y E A R S O LD A m on g p rom in en t U k rain ian w om en, in th e free w orld, th ere are also sch olars. O ne o f th em is N eon ila K ordysh, an archeolo- g ist. O ur con tribu tor v isited h er in h er h om e in M inneapolis, M inn. M rs. K ord ysh g ave h er th e ou t lin es o f h er scien tific career. S h e stu d ied arch eology in U krain e, and started soon to p articip ate in archeological exp ed it i ons. F irst sh e did research o f th e old G reek colonies, on th e b each o f th e B lack Sea. L ater, sh e turned h er atten tion to th e ex cavation s o f th e T ryp illa cu lture along th e D niep er river. T h ese 3,000 to 5,000 years old settle m en ts on U k rain ian soil are am ong th e m ost ex citin g exp eri en ces of U krainian arch eologists. M rs. K ordysh is th e on ly exp ert o f th is cu ltu re in th e free w orld. M rs. K ordysh is n ow w orking on a su rvey o f th is th em e. She con trib u tes to variou s scien tific m agazin es; and is a m em ber of th e A rch eology S ociety o f M in n esota.
