The U krainian N ation al W o m en ’s L eague o f A m erica, th e la r g es t U krainian w o m en ’s organization in the n on-C om m unist w orld , is a ct in g as the h ostess fo r th is gatherin g g r a tu la tio n s a n d b e s t w is h e s to t h e U k r a in ia n N a tio n a l W o m e n ’s L e a g u e o f A m e ric a , y o u r m e m b e r a n d s ta u n c h co -w o rk er. M a y God s h o w e r H is b le s s in g s u p o n all o f y o u h e r e to d a y , a n d m e m b e rs o f y o u r re s p e c tiv e o r g a n iz a tio n s . T h a n k you. H e le n F . D . L o to ts k y w h ich w ill be attend ed b y som e 160 d elegates from four continents. Som e idea o f the m anner in w hich the brave p eop le of U kraine h a v e been separated can be gleaned from a stud y o f the p laces from w h ich th e d eleg a tes to th e C ongress w ill o rig i nate: T hey in clu d e B razil, V en ezu ela, A ustralia, Germ any, Great B r it ain, Canada, and th e U nited States. The slogan of th e Congress is “U krainian w om en in th e n on-C om - m uist w orld in d efen se of the four freedom s, and hum an rights, w h ere - ever th ey are d en ied in th e W orld.” The d eleg a tes are dedicated — and rig h tly so — to opposing th e forces of appeasem ent. T h ey w ork for p o lic ie s of steadfast opposition to com m unism and of free w orld a c tiv i ties based on firm n ess and strength — th e on ly lan guage th e m en in the K rem lin understand and respect. The W orld C ongress o f U krainian W om en se rv e s a v ita l task of sp o t lig h tin g th e atten tion of th e w orld on th e p lig h t o f th e n ob le p eop le of U kraine, a country n o w trapped beh ind th e Iron Curtain. I t should serve to in spire a ll of us to a re d e d i cated effo rt to a ch iev e th e fre ein g of U krain e so that it can once m ore thak e its rig h tfu l p la ce in th e fa m ily of free nations. I am p lea sed on th is occasion to salu te th e d eleg a tes to the Congress for th e w on d erfu l m anner in w hich th ey are p reserv in g th e fin e tra d i tions o f U krain e and for th eir u n ceasin g labors fo r th e independ en ce of th eir hom eland. In th is connection, I ask unanim ous con sent to h ave p rin ted in th e R ec ord, fo llo w in g m y rem arks, a resum e of U k rain e’s status to date, w h ich Mrs. H elen F. D . I t w as tim e ly f o r t h e L e a g u e to t a k e i t s j u s t p la c e in t h e su n , a n d in 1949 i t w a s a c c e p te d in to t h e fo ld o f t h e G e n e ra l F e d e r a tio n o f W o m e n ’s C lubs — t h e l a r g e s t w o m en ’s o rg a n iz a tio n in A m e r ica w ith a m e m b e rs h ip o f 11 m il lion. A n d in 1952, t h e L e a g u e b e cam e a m e m b e r o f t h e N a tio n a l C ouncil o f W o m en .
