laws of her club and cooperates with them. Is willing to represent her club whenever needed at various meetings and to bring back an ex cellent report. Is willing to contribute her ta lents to her club. To serve on a committee. Accepts an office when she feels qualified to do so. Expresses her opinion on an is sue in the meeting during discus sion, and not after decision is made. Committees sometimes fail be cause: Details are boring. Your members are interested in plans and action. Small items can be left in the hands of a member for per sonal decision. Don’t waste your committee members’ time. Don’t give up—give in! Don’t hold out for your own viewpoint until the others are disgusted or lose inter est. Give in on secondary points to gain cooperation. Go along with the majority. You can accomplish nothing alone. Give everybody a job. “Everybody wants to get into the act,” as Durante says. Secure newspaper publicity and be sure to mention all those who are ac tive and Jr.ivc assignments. We’re human enough to like seeing our names in print and getting crerlit for the work we do. Don’t і rave anyone out. “BE A MEMBER. MEMBER—GET A (From GFWC publications). Anne Strykowsky The Weaving Stitch (Also known as tha Counted Running and Pattern Darning) To a swampy lowland region in Ukraine called Polissya and to the region around Kiev, capital of Uk raine, we are indebted for some charming examples of this stitch. There it is worked in true red for Polissya and red-bordering-on- maroon around Kiev. You will like this stitch because it’s easy to do once you have your first row in and because it gives a very fine and truly woven-like ap pearance. The latter fact makes it especially appropriate for small articles. W'h'en working the coun ted running stitch use your em broidery (Long Eye) needle and a two or three strand thick em broidery thread. If design you have chosen is a narrow one and you would like to broaden it, repeat each row of stitches two or three times. Your work will then look squarish like the patterns below. On the other hand if you want a very fine effect, stitch in the first row according to the graph, reverse your material and your graph- picture and then stitch in the next block. The second drawing above illustrates the second. The designs a, b, c, etc. will help you get started. They are meant to be worked in red. Now go to it and let me know how you are coming along by sending me a line or two — % SUA. ACTIVITIES OF UKRAINIAN JUNIOR LEAGUE BR. 52 Since the beginning of the year, with the installations of the new officers, Branch 52 of the U'NWL has indeed been very active. During the Ukrainian holidays, in January, a group of members went caroling and the reception accorded them by the people visit ed, was very gratifying, The ven ture was immensely successful, in fact, so much so, that it is hop ed to continue it in the years to come. Bingo Parties held at U'NWL Headquarters on Jan, 25 &rtd Feb. 23, had nice turnouts of members and some of their friends. Coffee, tea, and cake, baked by the mem bers were served. March 16 at 7 p.m. has been set aside for a White Elephant Sale to be held again at the UNWLA Headquarters. This is something new for Branch 52 members and the enthusiasm shown cannot but insure success. There will be new and used household articles on sale at low prices. Take advan tage of this opportunity and don’t fail to attend. A record crowd is expected! Stephanie Wochok. a) Sample design of the weaving stitch; b) fasten thread at the right hand side of your material, and working toward the left, pick up and ski-p four threads of the material until you reach the other end; c) turn the cloth upside down. The needle is once more on the right hand side. Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році . A рхів C У A - Ню Йорк , Н . Й . C Ш A.
