OUR OBJECTIVE On November 12, 1950, when the gavel fell to mark the close of the 9th Convention, and had com pleted the twenty five years of our corporate existence, we went back to our Chapters and our hftmes proud of the accomplish ments of those 25 years, and re joicing in the future that seemed mapped out before us. And we had a right to be proud; for in so short a time we had built a great and growing national organiza tion, composed of groups never before associated for joint enter prise, of the women who nev er, in all their busy lives-, had con tacts with other women outside their homes and their church so cieties, and of young women just out of school or college, thrilled over their first job, and the first money they had ever earned. Out o>f that untried and un organized group of workers came the leaders under whose direction we grew into strong Ukrainian National Women's League of America, Inc., by whose vision we were guided into the development of noble aims and ideals ; through whose knowledge we were en abled to solve the many problems which every organization must meet. It is not my purpose at this time to recount our accomplish ments and failures of those 25 years. These came to you through the medium of reports and discussions of those reports during convention sessions, and printed reports in “Our Life” and bulletins. Instead Ї would like to indicate to you as clearly as I can the road along which our great organization may tra vel in the future and it is both your duty and your privilege as members of the UNWLA to con sider it and to decide if it will lead our organization expedi tiously and safely toward the des tination you choose as its ulti mate goal. A new kind of approach is need ed, fittingly termed the research spirit. An organization steeped in the research idea, its executives and members all thinking of prob lems and studying carefully their solutions is something more than an organization. It is an organism with many opportunities for growth stretching out both for the individual and for the group. To make an organization into an organizm is a great achievement, because what was a mere mech anical effort becomes humanized, vitalized, creative action. In line with this thought I wish to present to you for your con sideration, discussion, and I hope adoption of A two-year objective. Our Goal During the next two years the Ukrainian Junior League should fit itself to- assume leadership, with a view toward keeping in the establishment the fullest possible opportunity, and reward, for the development of whatever capaci ties they may possess. The development of the indivi dual member is directly in line with a larger objective. If her influence is to be a factor in de termining the course of organi zations’ progress she must broad en her viewpoint and endeavor to grow in ability and power. Fos tering her individual development should continue to be the initial objective of our UNWLA. The larger purpose we suggest pre cludes neither this nor any other aims for which we are now striv ing. Rather, it focuses them and enables us to work for them with new strength and purpose. Development of Program through National and Local Committees Our seven standing committees may be classed as follows: First, organization committees, which include Membership, Finance, Program and Publicity. These are grouped in an Organization De partment, Second, committees primarily relating to Education, Magazine. These we group in the Education Department. Third, committees relating to the indivi dual, comprising the Legislation, and Public Relations committees. These come under the Public Af fairs Department. Organization Department The growth and development of the committees in this depart ment — Membership, Finance, Program and Publicity—justifies our embarking on a broad pro gram such as the one embodied in this Two-Year Objective. These committees should play a vital part in interpreting the objective throughout our entire member ship and to the public -- especial ly in training and preparing new members to understand and ap preciate this goal. Education Department Study is urgently needed. Edu cation takes time and energy and is costly. Without neglecting the present cultural program aiming at the development of the indivi dual member, the resources of the national and local education com mittees should be directed through discussion groups, study courses, debates and lectures. Magazine “Our Life” Our editorial content should more and more reflect varying opinions on our organization, and our Magazine chairman and edit orial counsels should endeavor to stimulate public opinion among all readers of the magazine in keeping with our objective.
