Aspects O f "O ur Life” the ability to leave behind them a never>to*be^fargotfcen work for T o Support “O u r L ife ” Is O u r D u ty *“Qu»r Life,” the first official organ or journal of our organiza tion, the Ukrainian National Wo men's League of America, fc&s ^become a reality after several years of striving to maintain я •tenge enough “press fund” for a journal. which will1! give our .members and the Ukrainian Americans an inisight of what goes on in our organization's ac tivities. We will try to do more than that, for our aim is to up- . hold all phases of liife among the Ukrainian American women, not only organizational work, but al so their home-life and public ac tivities. For “Our Life” implies all of that. To continue such a paper suc cessfully means the support and interest of every member of iur organization without a let-up. Let us all subscribe now to “Our Life.” To be a L o y al M em ber o f SU A A loyal memrer of Soyuz Uk- rainok Ameryky, is one who faithfully attends all meetings, (un.besis illness prevents) one who supports the SUA by-laws and respects her officers, carries out the obligations and assessments, and last buit not least, subscribes to the official organ “Our Life.” What prompts the writer to speak of organization loyalty? All my life I was desirous of na tional expression but many local ities in the United States bad very little knowledge of “Uk rainians.” During my early school years, Ї could not compete with my classmates who spoke knowingly of the ancestry of their parents, and this bothered me very much. I knew that some day soon American Ukrainians all over the United States will at tain leadership and all schools in America willl speak of Ukrainians and their culture and and cus toms. Twelve years ago it was my good fortune to exchange confidences with our local church pastor who was beginning to see the dire need for a national in terest among his people and wi'th his cooperation a visitor came to the Ukraiians in our midst; to day she heads our S. U. A. She tokl uis of this great organization which was still rather in its in- fancy, and I made up my -mind that if I am going to be of any use to the Ukrainian people, who s.tru!ggledvsq dearly for their mo ther country, Ukraine, I better know more of these people and their history. “ Personal C ontact” Dear , friends, no contact can ever give more knowledge re garding a class of people than an organization where one learns of their history, culture and prog- : ressivness. It is the ^personal contact” upon terms of friendli ness, warmth, cordiality, inter est, sympathy, understanding, neighborlmes-s, helpfulness, yes, and criticism, which immediately * places one in the hearts of those surrounding you. It was this per sonal contact of one ye air in my , S. U. A. branch that nr ought me to headquarters of SUA eleven years ago and immediately I felt a responsibility to the Ukrainian American people. I felt the urge to spread Ukrainian history and the culture of tihe Ukrainian peo ple among my American friends, schools and organizations. I wanted to write about it to the local newspaper. Every activity of my SUA branch members and important resolutions of Ukrain ian American manifestations were in the Ліооаі newspapers. Tbdlay the word Ukrainian in this city is linked immediately with that woman who is active in the Ukrainian National Women's Leage of America, today the^ United Nationalities Council of this city, which was organized by a college president and the facul ty, includes the name • of that Ukrainian .American woman; to day the patriotic American groups call upon this woman to represent the Ukrainian in im portant civic matters. It is not because this SUA member and officer wishes to honor her name with such distinctions, and I speak sincerely, it is because that early desiiire to uphold and to up lift the Ukrainian people in com munities where there has been little or no recognition of the Ukrainian people and their cul ture ; it is to bring refore the in tellectual public thalt “friendly enemies” of these localities have be^n too long misrepresenting Ukrainians as some “mixed Slavs without a culture of their own.” It is our duty as members of a cultural society to kill ^such in triguing remarks with our con stant good work among the vari ous American organizations. It is to honor the Ukrainian men and women who died to preserve Uk rainian culture, that we must go on giving our American friends the knowledge which we have re garding the great 45 million Uk rainian people. Y o u ng G eneration S hould C on tin ue T radition It is my contention to plead and to go on pleading to the Uk rainian moth ears and fathers to help their children to acquire knowledge of tiheir Ukrainian Ukrainian background and cul ture by reading the works of the great Taras Shevchenko, Markian Shiashkievich, Ivan Fran'ko, Lesia Ukrailnlka So phia Rusova and many oth ers to whom God had entrusted the Ukrainian people and its oauise. I appeal in the name of these leaders who sacrificed ev erything,. just as our dear ones are doinig today, do not let your mother tongue die out in your home. Do not forget your Uk rainian customs but continue to instill the Ukrainian culture and the ‘history of the Ukrainian peo ple irjto the hearts of your chil dren, for America is buil't of an interwoven foundation of all Eu ropean cultures. In my associa tion with leaders of American or- ganitions, it is my combat to con vince them that the Ukrainian American second and third gene ration has not lost the desire to uphold the traditions of their pa rents and that it is their desire to see justice done to this great nation, in the form of an indepen dent government for Ukraine. This inclinaltion to work for the Ukrainian cause and the rec ognition in America of many fine Ukrainian American leaders, has been instilled in me through my association for twelve years with the Ukrainian people by being active in Soyuz Ukrainok Ame ryky, the greatest American Wo men's organization today! En courage your daughters and friends to join the file and ranks of th)|s finje cultural organiza tion and help our American friends to understand that we are a patriotic and civic minded peo ple who share the respect of all our intelligent neighbors. A m erican U k ra in ia n Congress It is the hope of our Ukrain ian American leaders and com munities that the representation of our youth organizations will be present at the Ukr. Amer. Congress in Philadelphia on Jan. 22nd and 23rd, 1944. Come and share your views; come and colll'ect tihe information we must have to be intelligently informed for our community worg among the Ukr. American people. Let us prove to the American intellect and others who, are interested, that the Uk rainian Americans intend to ask their share in opinions during the post-car peace plans, where equality, self expression and free dom for all peoples shall be dis cussed and distributed including the long occupied territories of Unrain e. It is the duty O'f every SUA Branch to re represented at the Ukrainian American Congress. A nnette L . K m e tz. ____ . Щ АСТЬ Б О Ж Е НА Н О ВІЙ Д О Р О З І “Н А Ш О ГО ЖИТТЯ” !
