At a time when Ukraine is once again fighting for its freedom, the voices of women – those who for generations have preserved national identity, strengthened civic life, and represented Ukraine globally are gaining renewed significance. This theme was at the heart of an international online meeting organized by the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America together with the NGO “SVOYA. Women’s Network for Education and Development” as part of Women’s History Month.

The event brought together researchers, community leaders, and representatives of Ukrainian organizations from different countries, creating a space to reflect on the historical legacy and contemporary role of Ukrainian women. Participants were welcomed by Oksana Lodziuk-Krywulych, First Vice President of UNWLA, and Alla Shvets, Head of the NGO “SVOYA. Women’s Network for Education and Development” and Doctor of Philology.

In her presentation, Alla Shvets outlined the historical continuity of the Ukrainian women’s movement and its influence on the development of state-building ideas and cultural diplomacy. Historian Dr. Liudmyla Belinska presented research on the work of Lidiya Burachynska, a prominent cultural figure who devoted her life to preserving Ukrainian embroidery traditions and cultural heritage within the diaspora.

Irena Chalupa, President of UNWLA Branch 78 (Washington, DC), spoke about the life and legacy of Nadiya Svitlychna – a human rights advocate, dissident, and cultural leader who, through her involvement with the Ukrainian Helsinki Group, her broadcasts for Radio Liberty, and her publications, helped bring global attention to human rights violations in Ukraine.

Another important historical perspective was presented by Dr. Kateryna Shmeha, who highlighted the story of Hanna Dmyterko – a participant in combat during World War I and an active leader in Ukrainian civic life. Her life journey stands as a powerful example of courage, civic responsibility, and service to the community.

The discussion was moderated by Anna Bereznyak, UNWLA Director of Marketing and Communications, who guided the conversation toward examining the relevance of women’s leadership experiences in the context of today’s war and global challenges.

Throughout the discussion, participants emphasized that the legacy of Ukrainian women is not only a matter of historical memory but also a source of inspiration for present and future generations. Speakers underscored the importance of sustained efforts to preserve cultural identity, promote Ukrainian history internationally, and develop educational and research initiatives that strengthen connections between Ukraine and the diaspora.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to continue this important dialogue and to pursue new collaborative initiatives. Honoring the legacy of Ukrainian women who have shaped history remains a vital step in strengthening women’s leadership today and amplifying Ukraine’s voice on the global stage.
