The 150th anniversary of Lesia Ukrainka’s birth will be commemorated during 2021, and under the leadership of Artistic Director and Conduc - tor Oleh Mahlay the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus of North America (UBC) has developed a concert program dedicated to the creative work of Lesia Ukrainka. Earlier this year, the UBC approached the UNWLA National Board with a proposal of collaboration between the UNWLA and UBC to present and promote the series of commemo- rative concerts as an official cultural event of the UNWLA. “We are looking forward to the potential of this dynamic partnership and historic occa- sion,” said UNWLA President Marianna Zajac. “The cultural legacy of Lesia Ukrainka is impor - tant not only to the UNWLA, but to Ukrainians around the world, as well.” The artistic goal of the program is to high- light Lesia Ukrainka’s poetry, power, and place in Ukrainian culture through the use of songs, set mostly to the poetess’s own words, graph- ics of Lesia Ukrainka’s wax recordings of kob- zari from the early 20th century, photos to be projected on a large screen, as well as narra- tion to propel the story and inform the audi- ence about her rich life. The UNWLA and UBC anticipate providing a unique and memorable event for audiences to experience, one that will celebrate the 150th anni- versary of Lesia Ukrainka’s birth and provide new insight into this historical figure, a woman who stands in the pantheon of Ukrainian heroes. “Both organizations have a national network of members and supporters that makes for a natural working relationship between the two groups that respect the contributions of Lesia Ukrainka,” says UBC President Anatoli Murha. “Furthermore, this partnership aligns with our UBC@100 Legacy initiative to develop new audi- ences and collaborative projects. We are thrilled by the opportunity to work with the UNWLA.” The concert series, planned for the fall of 2021, will be presented in Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
