Ilona Sochynsky, a prolific fine artist, graphic designer, and educator, is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and holds an MFA from the Yale School of Art. She successfully led a graphic design firm, Ilona Sochynsky Associates, until 1979, after which she decided to devote her - self fully to painting. Her initial paintings from this period address the concerns of Pop Art and Photorealism, particu- larly the work of James Rosenquist. By the mid-1980s, So- chynsky shifted her creative focus towards more internalized personal concerns, integrating relationships and pop cul- ture into images with psychological and emotional intensity. In the 1990s, Sochynsky turned towards formalism, explor - ing color and design elements, often in works composed of small-scale canvases. These interests later became manifest in large-scale, shaped canvases (2006-2007) where Sochyn- sky focused on defining and redefining the outer edges of the canvas. During her 40-year career, Sochynsky has exhibited widely in the United States and abroad. In 2012, she had a solo ret - rospective exhibit at The Ukrainian Museum, NY. Recent exhi- bitions include Abstracts on Paper at Windham Fine Arts, NY (2019), Flying Colors at Zorya Fine Art, Greenwich, CT (2016-17), Fugues: A Solo Exhibit by Ilona Sochynsky at Kaaterskill Fine Arts Gallery, NY (2016), Back to the U.S.S.R., Zorya Fine Art with Art Basel, Miami Beach, FL (2014). Sochynsky’s work is found in numerous private and public collections, including the Zim- merli Art Museum at Rutgers University, Noyes Museum of Art, Morris Propp Foundation, and The Ukrainian Museum.
