“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 2019 WWW. UNWLA .ORG 15 Co - curator Yuri Mischenko pre- paring the exhibit of rushnyky . (Photo N . Hon- charenko) Спів - куратор виставки Юрій Міщенко працює над експозицією виставки рушників (фото Н. Гончаренко) . Ukraine has beautiful folk art, and this ex- hibit provides an opportunity to see some of the best of it : textile - based folk art. This type o f art is still very little known outside of Ukraine. Our goal is twofold: to share our fascination and to inspire your fascination with this art form. Rushnyky have b een considered sacred by Ukrainian families, and have always been treated with the utmost respect. The rushnyk, in fact, f ollowed a person from birth to death. An infant was brought to the sacrament of baptism on a rushnyk. A newlywed young couple would st and on a rushnyk during the sacrament of matrimony. A deceased person might be taken to bu rial on a rushnyk. Th is year mark s the 5th anniversary of the Ukrainian Revolution of Dignity and the com mem- oration of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred who sacrificed their lives during their heroic stand for freedom against pro - Moscow thugs on the cen - tral square of Kyiv in early 2014. Our exhibit is dedicated to these heroes and to those who lost their lives fighting back the Russian invasion in Eastern Ukraine and Crimea during the past 5 years. Many of the fallen were very young and never had the o pportunity to make use of a wedding ritual cloth, but instead , were bur- ied with one. The exhibit is at the Ukrainian History and Education Center’s Library Gallery located at 135 Davidson Avenue, Somerset, N ew Jersey. The ex- hibition will remain open throug h August 31, 2019 , during the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from noon to 4 p.m. on the first Saturday of every month. Please note that the cen- ter is closed from noon to 1 p.m. for lunch during the week. Groups are welcome by appointme nt. More information can be found at http://ukrhec.org/exhibits .
