“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 2017 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 27 Sonia Mamus Rudolph Honored as “Person of the Year ” by Marian Serna Jerry Pochodaj, “Ambassador of the Year” and Sonia Mamus Rudolph, “Person of the Year” February 18, 2017, was a very special day for mem- bers of UNWLA Branch 124, the Ukrainian Ameri- can Association of St. Petersburg, Florida, and the entire Ukrainian community in St. Petersburg and beyond. On this day, the annual International Ball was held by the St. Petersburg International Folk Fair, also known as “SPIFFS.” At this International Ball, Sonia Mamus Rudolph, a valued member of the Ukrainian American Association and an active and essential member of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America’s Branch 124, was se- lected to represent Ukrainians as “Person of the Year.” Jerry Pochodaj, a member of the Ukrainian American Association who is very active in the St. Petersburg Ukrainian community, was selected to represent Ukraine as the “Ambassador of the Year.” “SPIFFS” began 42 years ago, and we are proud to say that the Ukrainians American Associ- ation in St. Petersburg was among the first ethnic organizations to join this citywide, international organization. St. Petersburg’s Ukrainians continue to be an important component of “SPIFFS, ” and we strengthen the city through our membership and active participation in the organization while educating others about Ukraine. Over 35 countries are represented in “SPIFFS,” which annually sponsors the Interna- tional Ball and hosts a citywide International Fes- tival. Ethnic communities of countries represented in the St. Petersburg area participate in this festi- val, displaying their costumes, providing ethnic cuisine, and educating others about their respec- tive cultures and traditions. This past year, over 10,000 students attended the International Festi- val and enjoyed seeing and learning about all the participating countries. The “SPIFFS” Interna- tional Festival is held mainly for students, how- ever, all visitors are welcome. The Ukrainian American Association of St. Petersburg is respon- sible for the Ukrainian booth. Members of UNWLA Branch 124 help with the preparation, staff the Ukrainian booth, and teach others about Ukrain- ian traditions and culture during this weekend event. Members of the St. Petersburg community, the Ukrainian American Association, and UNWLA Branch 124 had an enjoyable evening learning about different countries, and seeing the beautiful attire representing countries around the globe. Best of all was seeing our beloved Ukraine repre- sented at the International Ball by Sonia and Jerry.
