26 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 2017 Woman of Impact by Ola Movchan Novak Friends of Vera Swade (member of Branch 124 in St. Petersburg, Florida) know she is a dynamo, a woman with many talents, interests, and skills. One local newspaper, the Citrus County Chronicle , featured Vera in a 2016 article titled “10 Who Shape Our Community,” an annual Women of Im- pact program created by Altrusa, an international community service organization which highlights local women deserving recognition. Vera (Korduba) Swade, Ed.D., is originally from the Cleveland, Ohio, area where she began her teaching career, earning graduate degrees and rising through the teaching ranks. After 30 years in the teaching arena, she retired and moved to Citrus Hills in Inverness, Florida, 16 years ago with her husband Kenny Swade (a fellow teacher and re- tiree from the Cleveland area). But how exactly does Vera’s “retirement” look? The following list reveals some of her current activities : Professor at St. Leo University and the College of Central Florida in Ocala, Florida Member of Citrus Rotary Club and chairperson of the Scholarship Committee Member of Good Shepard Lutheran Church and chairperson of the Social Ministry Committee and the WELCA (Women of the Evangelical Church in America) Member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a sorority for active and retired teachers which greets new teachers with “goodie bags” Member of Leadership Council for “Take Stock in Children” (an organization providing scholar- ships to deserving students) and a mentor to a 9 th grade student in this program Professional Guardian for 5 wards who are legally incapacitated And this list includes only what the Citrus County Chronicle described. Those of us who know her, also know that Vera has found the time and energy for even more. She is also the author of a children’s book entitled Lump, a Dog Detective in The Secret of the Ring , which focuses on the theme of forgiveness; president of Reading Book Club 2 in Citrus Hills, Florida; season ticket holder (along with her hus- band) to several theater compa- nies in the area; frequent and en- thusiastic world traveler. Cover of Vera’s Book And last but certainly not least, we can’t forget that Vera is an active member of UNWLA Branch 124. In fact, she is currently Branch 124’s vice president and English press chairperson and the author of numerous articles published in Our Life over the years. Vera also finds time to attend meetings and events that are 92 miles one-way from her home! Those who know her and work with her se- cretly believe that Dr. Vera K. Swade has discov- ered the Fountain of Youth and Energy in Florida! We are proud of our UNWLA Branch 124 member and salute her varied altruistic and creative en- deavors.
