“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 2017 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 13 Pro.Svit: Bringing Positive Change to Ukraine One Teacher at a Time by Svitlana Kostenko Olena Khomichak, Nadia Mykhalevych (Pro.Svit co-founder), Yulia Vasyliv, Vira Tymkiv, Dzvinka Pavlusiv, and Lilya Borovets (Pro.Svit co-founder). Photo by Oksana Kovalyshyn. Oleg Popov walks into the classroom full of stu- dents just a couple of years younger than he. Fresh from the university he is about to give his first ever lesson in experimental physics. Oleg is nervous, knowing the bad high school student's attitude towards adults, but he hopes to find common ground with the children. Oleg faced another huge challenge. The equipment in the physics lab at school No 15 in Slavyansk was old. It is easy to forget teaching objectives when you have to use a barometer from 1969 or to show most of the experiments on YouTube. On aver- age the tools were about 10-15 years old. With science moving forward so fast, it was counter- productive to use them. Oleg started thinking about solutions, and thankfully the solution found him. The teacher got involved in Pro.Svit, an educational program for educators. The first lesson went better than expected. The new teacher and the children even ended up playing football together after the class. So what is Pro.Svit and how does it help teachers become better? Pro.Svit was born in 2014, right after the Maidan Revolution. The founders of Pro.Svit got to know each other while working at AIESEC, an international organiza- tion that provides young people with cross-cul- tural internships and volunteer experiences in other countries. Each of the founders of Pro.Svit held high management positions in AIESEC. Na- dia Mykhalevych, Yulia Barannikova, and Lilya Borovets drew their inspiration from an online course in Blended Learning on Coursera. They wanted to bring something similar to Lviv. The founders first wanted to focus on kids, and spe- cifically to create classes for school children based on blended learning, an approach that combines e-learning with traditional classroom methods and independent study. The ideas es- poused by AIESEC offered solutions for school educators who would be implementing innova- tions in their classrooms. Pro.Svit has two branches, Pro.Skills and GoFundEd. Pro.Skills is an educational platform for teachers that trains them how to use blended learning models and also teaches them project management skills for achieving their profes-
