12 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЧЕРВЕНЬ 2017 book, which delegates and members received dur- ing registration for this convention. I would like to thank each member of the National Board for her contribution to our success. We hope that you enjoyed last evening’s “member appreciation meet & greet”—the goal of which was for our delegates and guests to get to know one another informally, to come away with the realization that we, Ukrainian American women, living from coast to coast in these United States, have a deep bond which unites us. It is this bond which calls us to build on the work of our pre- decessors, and it is this bond that calls us to be cre- ative and move the UNWLA toward its centennial anniversary. I wish each of you an interesting and productive Convention and ask that you contribute your thoughts, your ideas, your questions, to our assembly, as it is your ideas that will enrich our gathering and our future. In closing, I would like to share with you that on the occasion of UNWLA’s 90 th anniversary, the UNWLA financed the publication of an aca- demic compilation on the life and works of Natalia Kobrynska, a Ukrainian writer, feminist, and activ- ist. The title of the book (loosely translated) is She Traveled Not Only on the Road of the Spirit of the Times, But Also Ahead of Those Times . Perhaps we members of the UNWLA can adopt these words as a slogan for the work before us; let us not just react to the spirit and the needs of the times, let us also become visionaries. We thank the entire Convention Commit- tee for its hospitality and for its months of plan- ning and execution of details in order to host this weekend. I warmly welcome each and every one of you ! Slava Ukraini! Our Cover Artist Marta Huley Legeckis was born in Lviv, Ukraine, in 1943 and immigrated to the United States with her parents in 1948. She attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City and graduated from City College in New York with a BFA and an MFA. For the past 30 years, she has run her own calligraphy business in the Washington, D.C., area. Among her clients are the White House, the Departments of State and of the Interior, the National Gallery, and numerous embassies. Marta has also been president, vice president, and workshop chair of the Washington Calligraphers Guild. In 2006 she was co-director of Let- terforum, an international calligraphy conference. She is currently on the faculty of the Smithsonian, where she teaches calligraphy. About 10 years ago, she rekindled her interest in fine art, especially water- color. She enjoys experimenting with a limited palette, and at times combines her watercolor and calli- graphic skills to create calligraphic paintings. Her goal is to entice viewers to look beyond the realm of everyday life and embrace a richer appreciation of their surroundings.
