The retrospective exhibition of the sculptures of Mykhailo Chereshnovsky opened at The Ukrainian Mu seum on November 10, 1991. The creative effort of the artist spanning five decades (1940-1980s) is represen ted in works executed in various media such as bronze, plaster and wood. Also on display are commemorative emblems and medals. The exhibition offers photographs of Chereshnovsky’s memorials which at the present time are in outdoor settings in the United States and Canada. A handsome catalogue with over 80 photo graphs and as essay about the artist written by curator of the exhibition Bohdan Pevny is available at the Mu seum. Mykhailo Chereshnovsky was born in the village of Stezhnytsi in Western Ukraine in 1911. As a young boy Mykhailo was drawn to woodcarving and his talent was so prounounced that sponsors helped him through his schooling, first in Kolomyia, then in Krakow’s Insti tute of Plastic Art from where he graduated in 1939 as a sculptor. During these formative years Chereshnovsky composed numerous works in wood, stone and porce lain and exhibited them. However, they were all lost in the turmoil of World War II, which also created a gap in the artist’s work effort. It was in Krakow in the 1930’s that the young artist became aware of and sympathetic to the growing Ukra inian nationalist movement. His participation in the movement defined his actions in later years (he joined the Ukrainian Insurgent Army,) and had a strong influ ence on his creative life. Chereshnovsky’s sculptures such as P ry re c h e n y (Condemned) 1948, P o rtra it o f S te p an B a n d e ra 1948, G e n e ra l Taras C h u p ry n k a 1950,1952, (there were several variation of the subject), and M o n u m e n t to H e ro e s 1962, are some examples of his ’’heroic” styled works. Chereshnovsky’s sculptures on the theme of “mo ther” show the artist’s deep personal feelings of love and adoration both for the Mother of God — M o th e r o f G o d w ith C h ild 1956, K n e e lin g M a d o n n a 1955, M o th e r o f G o d w ith S le e p in g C h ild 1953 to cite a few examples, and for his native land — U k ra in a M a ty (Mother Ukraine) 1948. The artist created numerous portraits of individuals which reflect his perception into the characters of his subjects, showing strength, tenderness, poetry, whimsy and beauty. The most striking is the portrait of a Girl 1947. Some others are Ballerina Roma Pryma 1960, 18 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 1991 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році . A рхів C У A - Ню Йорк , Н . Й . C Ш A.
