OUR LIFE Monthly, published by Ukrainian National Women s League of America VOL. XLVI MARCH 1989 TARAS SHEVCHENKO, THE ARTIST Тарас Шевченко. В Лихвині. Туш, перо. 1859 р. Taras Shevchenko. In Lychvyn. Ink drawing, 1859. Editor: Marta Baczynsky Every»year Taras Shevchenko is remembered in the month of March, the month of his birth — 3/9/1814, and the month of his death — 3/10/1861. However, we tend to remember him as the poet, the bard, who retold our past, spoke of his own life and foretold the future of Ukraine, the glory and the sadness. To us Ukrainians his words are inspirational. How ever, our enchantment with his verse tends to over shadow his accomplishments as an artist. Actually it is difficult to make the judgement whether Shevchenko was a better poet or a better painter. Viewing his paintings, one is overwhealmingly im pressed and enthralled. Shevchenko is considered the founder of the realistic school of painting in Ukraine. Had he not been denied access to the world art galleries by the harsh and unfair circumstances in his life, Іяе undoubtedly would have assumed a most distinguished place among the great artists of his day. When Shevchenko’s paintings are viewed in chrono logical order, we can see a running commentary on his life. We are introduced to individuals that he met and had dealings with, we see scenes of places where he lived or visited. His self portraits, of which he did about 30, speak eloquently of hi« feelings and emotions. Тарас Шевченко. Нарцис та німфа. Ехо. Сепія. 1856 р. Taras Shevchenko. Narcissus and nymph.
