ficult thing she had ever had to do in her life, was to change careers and work with her husband. Needless to say, one of Ms. Helpern’s endearing traits is her sense of humor. I personally was very thrilled to meet Pia Lindstrom. It’s a bit of movie history, but for those who don’t know, she is the oldest daughter of Ingrid Bergman, the exqui sitely beautiful heroine of the classic film “Casablanca” and my all-time favorite actress. At the close of the presentation events, a tribute was paid to Eleanor Lewis Donnenfeld, the outgoing president of NCW. The charming and gracious lady was UNW LA B R A N C H U P D A TE S BRANCH 35 SPONSORS SUCCESSFUL EVENTS UNWLA Branch 35 (Queens, New York) which celebrated its 50th Anniversary recently, has had a very busy and productive year. Through the initia tive of their Cultural chairman Olga Alvino, two interesting events were planned. On Saturday March 15, 1986 a pysanka mak ing demonstration took place in Ozone Park Pub lic Library. After an explanation by O. Alvino of the age-old craft, the participants had an oppor tunity to view Slavko Nowitsky’s film “Pysanka”. An easter egg exhibit was displayed as well. On June 6 this year the prize-winning docu mentary film “ Harvest of Despair" was shown at the same library. The viewing was followed by a question and answer period during which NYU professor Wolodymyr Zaryckyj answered questions raised by the audience. The evening proved to be very informative, as many Americans have not had the chance to see this film previously. Branch 35 wishes to acknowledge the work of both Olga Alvino and her husband Richard, who characterized as a vigorous leader of the organization during whose tenure many young people joined the ranks of NCW. Mrs. Donnenfeld is a strong motivator —"We don’t always agree, but we all want the same thing — a better world.” For me the evening ended too soon. We all went our separate ways, taking with us all that we have learned and enjoyed, down from the quiet elegance of Equita- ble’s fiftieth floor to the busy streets of New York. I felt good, uplifted in spirit and with food for thought for many days to come. These events could not have taken place without the help, enthusiasm and support of Mr. Rudolf Bold — librarian. On December 4, 1985 I represented the UNWLA Regional Council of New York at the 22nd annual “Woman of Conscience Award” ceremony sponsored by the National Council of Women of the USA. I was reim bursed by the UNWLA NY Regional Council for attend ing this affair. In turn, I would like to donate this $27.00 to the Press Fund of Our Life.
