CONTEST FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNGSTERS Commemorating the Millennium of Christianity in Ukraine Several years ago UNWLA Branch 64 of New York proposed a plan to hold a literary and art contest for children and young adults commemorating the Millen nium of Christianity of Ukraine. During the XX Conven tion the Education Committee Chairman of the Execu tive Board organized an exhibit which featured several of the contest entries. The purpose of the exhibit at that time was to elicit a greater interest in the contest, par ticularly from members of UNWLA. Unfortunately, the response has been minimal despite letters, announcements and advertisment sent to UNWLA Branches, Churches and community organizations. To honor this historic event the Ukrainian community is organizing on a large scale, planning scholarly con ferences and anticipating published works. But, one may ask, what is being done to encourage our youngs ters to take part in these planning activities. It is sad to say that within the scope of these undertakings there is hardly any focus on youth. By neglecting to include our young people in this all-encompassing project, we are denying them a sense of history, their history, their heritage. Parents, grandparents and teachers are urged to emphasize the importance of this event by encouraging our youngsters to enter this contest. Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, through the initiative of Branch 64 in New York, announces a contest for children to commemorate the Millennium of Christianity in Rus’-Ukraine. REQUIREMENTS Through pictures drawings, paintings or the written word contestants are asked to recreate some aspect of the historical event of the official acceptance of Christianity by our ancestors in the year 988 A.D. and the subsequent influences this had on the development of Ukrainian culture and history. WHO MAY ENTER THE CONTEST? Contestants must be between the ages of 5-16 and be of Ukrainian descent. Also, children not formally enrolled in Ukrainian language courses or schools, but who are learning Ukrainian language and history privately are encouraged and invited to participate in the contests. SUGGESTED TOPICS FOR CONSIDERATION: 1. The baptism of the Kievan people in the Dnieper River 2. The toppling and drowning of the pagan idol Perun 3. Prince Volodymur presiding on his throne 4. Volodymur’s heraldic symbol — the trident, Tryzub 5. Sts. Volodymur and Olga 6. Apostle Andrew blessing the hills of Kiev 7. A monk of Pecherska Lavra (Kievan Cave Monastery) 8. Legends 9. What can I tell my friends about the Millennium of Christianity in Ukraine? 10. What is the difference between Rus’ and Russia? PURPOSE: To incorporate the works of contestants in a book, which will represent how children of Ukrainian heritage view the Millennium of Christianity in Ukraine. Each entry published will give credit by showing the contestant’s name, age, school and country. During the formal celebration of theMillennium.and exhibitionwill showcase these entries. Each entry will be evaluated by a panel of judges. ’’НАШЕ Ж ИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 1986 27
