HEALTH & WELL-BEING By Dr. Maria Motyl GOOD NEWS ABOUT STRESS For years doctors have been saying that stress can be harmful. Consequently, it has been linked to every disease from asthma to ulcers to heart disease. Recent studies, however, have found that stress is not always harmful and that it can be a crucial, even productive part of life. A person who is in control of his/her life can channel stressful energy into a healthier future, while people who avoid conflict and competition may actually be doing themselves harm. Researchers are finding that the bad effects of stress are triggered not by the pressures of decision-making but rather by the feeling that one’s decisions are useless, that life is overwhelming and be yond one’s control. Therefore, it is not the high-level executives who are most vulnerable to stress but the lower-level managers, secretaries, sales clerks, etc. During a stressful situation the body releases a number of chemicals that enable the person to perform in a crisis. The typical “flight-or-fight” response provides a surge of energy, power and concentration. Other biochemical agents are released in response to painful stimuli. The science of neurochemistry, of understanding the functions of each of these chemicals is still in the infancy stage. Many doctors, however, are be ginning to understand that tranquilizers are no solution to the stress of everyday life. Tranquilizers interfere with the body’s chemical reaction to stress and may, therefore, cause more harm than good. Learning to live with stress and to channel it to positive ends is the im portant thing. HEART ATTACKS STOPPED IN PROGRESS Every day thousands of Americans suffer heart attacks. Many of the heart attacks are caused by blood clots in a coronary artery. By stopping the flow of blood these clots cause the destruction of a large number of heart muscle cells. Recently a new treatment has been developed that is capable of stopping heart attacks that are in progress. Doctors have found that injection of a clot-dissolving enzyme called strepto kinase can do just that. In this treatm ent doctors first puncture an artery in either the groin or arm and insert a thin tube called a ca theter. The catheter is guided to the aorta and then to the coronary arteries. A radioopaque substance is injected and the coronary arteries are outlined on X-rays. If the patient is found to have a blood clot, the doctor injects strepto- ki lase which can liquefy the clot and prevent permanent damage. The treatment works best when the enzyme is injected early in the course of the heart attack, probably in the first six hours. Once the cells have died, the treatment is pointless. The need for early treatment emphasizes the importance of recognizing early signs of heart attack. INHERITING ALCO HOLISM R esearchers have found that children of alcoholics are especially likely to become problem drinkers. In fact the risk for them is four times higher than for the rest of the population. While it is probable that certain genetic pre dispositions for alcoholism exist among these cases, it is also the quality of life in an alcoholic home that affects the children’s future drinking habits and behavior. A recent report made by a New York State agency shows that more than half a million New York residents under the age of twenty have a parent who is an alcoholic. Social agencies report that 40 to 90 percent of their caseloads involves such children. A number of states already have, or are considering legislation which would help children who are caught in the cir cumstances of an alcoholic household. The recent New York State report re commended that Family Court judges be empowered to require treatment for alcoholic parents as a condition to re taining custody of a child. New Jersey’s Legislature voted compulsory treatment last year for alcoholic parents in homes where there is a child “in crisis,” but the governor vetoed to plan because of cost. Delaware is currently the only state where a Family Court judge can order an alcoholic into treatment for “imperiling a family relationship.” НАШІ ҐРАДУАНТКИ 24-го травня 1982 відбулася ґра- дуація студентів медицини ’’Апстейт Медикал Сентер” у Сиракузах, Н.
