K olasky, John. E ducation in Soviet U kraine; a study in dis crim ination and R ussification. Toronto, P e te r M artin A ssoci ates, 1968. Pp. 238. W hat happens w hen a sincere U krainian C om m unist from C an ada goes to th e land of his an cestors to study th e U krainian language and lite ra tu re ? John K olasky, a C anadian high school teacher, w ith pro-Soviet sy m p a thies, spent tw o years a t th e Shevchenko U niversity in Kiev. He left fo r U kraine believing th a t “it w as a free republic in a v oluntary union enjoying th e w idest freedom fo r developm ent of its language, culture and cu s tom s.” He re tu rn ed to C anada w ith his illusions in sham bles and his luggage filled w ith loads of evidence to th e co n trary . John K olasky chose not to w rite a travelogue. In stead he produced a serious docum entary study, full of m eticulously researched data, statistica l analysis, in te r views and personal observations, w hich point out to th e deliber ate and system atic policy of in tensified R ussification in U k raine. K olasky found “a planned d is crim ination ag a in st U kraine and U krainians and a conspiracy ag ain st th e U krainian lan guage.” To m ost U krainians in th e free world, th is by itself, alas, is not a revelation. F rom his own van tag e point, how ever, w ith his special kind of inside knowledge K olasky is able to p resen t an extrem ely effective forceful indictm ent of th e R u s sian linguistic and cu ltural pol icy. He does it w ith th e w ealth of detailed data, in an unem o tional scholarly presentation, w ith th e cold logic of facts, in a h istorical and com parative p er spective. Wisdom is sometimes nearer when we stoop then when we soar.
