Ukrainian Days in Rome As reported by almost all U krainian papers recently, the last week of September was de cidedly a “ Ukrainian Catholic” week not only in Rome, but throughout the world, wherever Ukrainians have settled. We all remember the “ u p liftin g of spir i t ” which our communities expe rienced last year during the v is it of Josyf Cardinal Slipy. Some of this ‘u p liftin g ’’ was relived when delegations and private in d iv i duals took p art in the consecra tion of the Cathedral of St. So phia in Rome. W hat made th is consecration so special was not only its loca tion in the centre of Catholicism, though this fa ct had a bearing on its importance. The chief rea son fo r the participation of Ukrainians the world over in these ceremonies was th a t the newly erected and consecrated Cathedral has become the focal point of U krainian Catholicism. Lena Kostenko Just as since the 12th century the Cathedral of St. Sophia in Kiev symbolized U krainian C hristian u nity, this new St. So phia shall symbolize our U kra in ian u n ity regardless o f whether we live in Argentina or A u stra lia. I t w ill remind us th a t the old St. Sophia cannot be used fo r prayer, and th a t we may not be content u n til she is restored to her r ig h tfu l place as a great church, not a mere architectural relic. Another event, far-reaching in its consequences th a t took place immediately follow ing the ceremonies at St. Sophia, was the long awaited, long desired Synod of Bishops of the U kra in ian Catholic Church. The most im portant item on the agenda of the Synod was the patriarchal structure of the U krainian Cath olic Church. The Synod prepared and adopted a constitution of patriarchal structure and sub m itted to the Holy Father w ith a petition to elevate the M ajor Archiepiscopate to the d ig n ity of the Kievan-Galician P a triarch ate. This resolution, considered in the lig h t of the latest wave of religious persecution in all o f the Soviet Union, but especially in Ukraine, asserts the rig h t of our existence. I t underscores not only our independence fro m the Moscow Patriarch (under which the Soviets claim we a je ), b u t also our wish to remain an essen tia lly autonomous U krainian Church w ith in the fold of the one Catholic Church. I t express es our wish to govern our own Church affa irs, to assure a u n i fo rm ity of our R ite regardless of where in the world we live. I t w ill provide fo r a u n ifo rm ity of a u th o rity in the Ukrainian Church w ith o u t the undue in te r ference of an essentially L a tin Curia. There were, of course, other matters discussed at the Synod. M atters which concern us all very deeply: the language of the litu rg y , the preparation of fu ture priests, dialogues w ith O r thodox Ukrainians, and others. Le t us hope th a t now, once de cisions have been made, they w ill be fu lly and speedily implement ed fo r the good of our U k ra in ian Church and Nation. M.O. F IL IN G RECORD The Board Meeting of June, 1969 decided th a t filin g records on our members should be in tro duced in our Branches. Each record w ill contain the name, ad dress, telephone number and other data on each member. Sim ilar records w ill be establish ed at the Regional Council and Headquarters. And the world w ill say: “ You are a speck in me. A b rillia n t pain in life ’s dark tribula tion. Your fa ith — the b rin k of an idealist’s dream, Your love — live coals of hallucination.
