World Federation of Ukrainian Women's Organizations The U krainian community of Philadelphia and neighboring cities observed an im portant anniversary on March 22 — the 20th anniversary of the W orld Federation of U krainian Wom en’s Organizations. Twenty years ago a W orld Congress of U krainian Women was held in Philadelphia. The delegates to this Congress were women of d iffe re n t ages, in te r ests and backgrounds, yet de spite th e ir differences these women very quickly found a common language and common objectives. The Congress proved only a f ir s t step in the achieve ment of these objectives. I t indi- Lesya Ukrainka cated the need fo r a permanent center of representation and co ordination. The W orld Federa tion of U krainian Women’s Or ganizations, founded at this time, became th is center. Today, WFUWO unites 16 member organizations in 10 countries w ith an estimated membership of 25,000. The great m a jo rity of the membership re sides in the large U krainian col onies in the USA, Canada, Brazil and Argentina. WFUWO realizes th a t because of the v irtu a l enslavement of U krainian women in th e ir native land, i t is our duty here in the Free W orld to speak fo r all Translated by Percival Cundy U krainian women, and in fo rm the world about the real condi tions under which U krainian women live in th e ir own country. A committee of specialists was formed fo r th is purpose. The committee prepared and publish ed m aterial on the conditions of women in Ukraine in the U kra in ian, English and German lan guages. B u t WFUWO is equally con cerned w ith world problems. I t is a member of the W orld Move ment of Mothers (M.M.M.) w ith Headquarters in Paris, and also maintains close contact w ith the International Women’s Alliance. The member organizations of WFUWO joined the National Women’s Councils o f Canada, USA, A u stralia and the W orld Union of Catholic Women’s O r ganizations. Since WFUWO has no political or religious a ffilia tions, any women’s organization may become its member, provid ing th a t i t is founded on sound democratic principles and Chris tian ethics. To help its member organiza tions obtain th e ir objectives and beter utilize th e ir potential re sources, W FUWO designed a program to be carried out, ac cording to each organization’s possibilities. To fa c ilita te plan ning, a number of standing com mittees have been formed w ith specific objectives. W hile W FU- WO’s headquarters are located in Philadelphia, the committees have a wide representation. The educational committee is concerned w ith helping U kra in ian women the world over to suc cessfully preserve U krainian tra ditions, especially in th e ir fa m ily life .
