Vital Issues Concern of GFWC Convention B y M ary D u sh n yck PA R T 3 Ju niors and Y ou th The Juniors, wom en under 35, of w hich th e re are over 100,000 in th e GF, held th e ir own con ference p rio r to th e form al open ing of th e GF Convention. In cluded w as a discussion on “W here Lies R esponsibility?” w ith panelists from th e com m un ications m edia p articip atin g . A l so, th e Jun iors heard a re p o rt at th e T u fts New E ngland Medical C enter on b irth defects. The m a jo r p ro ject of th e Jun iors is th e ir CARE p rogram in th e P hilip pines. Of special in tere st to GF dele g ates was a youth panel on th e “Cam pus R evolt” w ith fo u r B os ton College stu d en ts as panelists. They said th ey w ere opposed to violent activ ists who “senseless ly d isru p t academ ic life” b u t th ey believed th e so-called re volt had resu lted in im proved conditions fo r m any stu d en ts and m ore involvem ent in th e com m unity. GFWC R eso lu tio n s B efore th e vote on th e resolu tions, M rs. Goode R. C heatham , T reasu rer, urged th e GF dele gates to re tu rn to th e ir com m un ities and ask th e ir law enforce m ent officers w h at th ey should do to help resto re resp ect and law ful order to our nation. The “ Crim e C risis” resolution urged Congress to create a jo in t com m ittee to inv estigate crim e, and fo r GF clubs to join in exam in ing th e crim e situ atio n in th e ir respective com m unities and ex am ine resources available to alle viate and p rev ent crim e and to in itiate program s to com bat crim e. O ther resolutions called fo r program s on d ru g abuse and fo r cam pus education on d rug u se; incom e ta x deduction fo r tu itio n ; flam e re ta rd a n t m a te ri als ; regulations on use of stim u lan t and depressant d rugs and m a riju a n a ; research into ra d ia tion fo r all types of electronic e q u ip m en t; highw ay develop m ent and b e a u tific a tio n ; and on trad e in strateg ic m aterials as “th ere is reliable evidence th a t th e Soviet U nion and its satel lites are fu rn ish in g a m aj or por tion of th e weapons and supplies used ag ain st A m erican m en fig h tin g in V ie tn a m ; th e re fo re ” it is resolved, th a t th e GFWC stron gly opposes U. S. aid to C om m unist countries and calls fo r suspension of all trad e in strateg ic m aterial w ith those countries fu rn ish in g w eapons and supplies to N orth V ietnam . The GF Convention also re affirm ed th e F undam ental F re e doms resolution passed in 1956, w hich now states th a t w hereas we are living in a tim e w hen h u m an freedom is su fferin g alarm ing reverses and w hereas our freedom s are sources of in sp ira tion to people in m any lands, giv ing th em stre n g th and guidance in th e ir effo rts tow ard freedom , it is resolved th a t th e GFWC de clares its belief th a t in an era w hen fundam ental hum an rig h ts are being subj ected to both overt and insidious attack , it is in a rekindled and v ib ran t fa ith in and th e practice of th e princi ples of freedom th a t th e hope of th e fu tu re lie s ; and it re ite rates its devotion and stro ng ly urges all A m ericans to re ite ra te th e ir devotion to those ideals w hich have m ade th is country a sanc tu a ry of freedom , etc. N e w GFWC T hem e — Individual In volvem en t M rs. W alter M agee, who w as elected GFW C presid ent fo r th e n ex t tw o years, stated in h er in au gu ral address th a t th e them e of h er ad m in istratio n would be “individual involvem ent,” and special atten tio n would be paid on g ettin g women to vote in state, local and national elec tions. The F ederation will con tin ue to com bat crim e and drug abuse and to cam paign fo r a clean en v iro n m en t; it will con tinue its CARE p ro ject to help feed th e w orld’s h u n g ry and will seek vocational and tra d e schol arsh ips fo r y oungsters who are n ot college m aterial. The new presid en t has served on every level in th e F ederation — from h er local club to ch air m anships and offices in th e G reater Cleveland and Ohio F ed eration on th ro u g h to th e office of 1st Vice P resid en t and now P residen t of th e GFW C. M rs. M agee, a w arm and gentle p er son, has found joy and satisfac tion in developing leadership in others. We hope our m em bers and read ers will become increasingly aw are of th e v ital role of th e GFWC in th e A m erican com m unity and of its vigilance for freedom fo r all m ankind, and will be inspired to advance th e w orthy objectives of th e GFWC in th e ir own com m unities.
