U N W L A M E M B E R S M E E T W ITH “W O M AN OF C O N SC IE N C E ” A W A R D W IN N E R A special meeting- designed to introduce th is y e a r’s recipient of th e “W om an of Conscience” A w ard was held in th e U krainian In stitu te of A m erica in New Y ork C ity on October 18, 1968. The aw ard is presented annu al ly by th e N ational Council of W om en of th e U.S.A. to th e wom an who, in th e Council’s opinion, m akes th e g re a te st con trib u tio n to fu rth e rin g th e cause of hum an rig h ts in th e so ciety a t large. T his year, M rs. A nastasia Volker, U N W LA vice president, was one of 20 women who received th e aw ard. The m eeting, w hich w as co- sponsored by U N W LA B ranches 32, 53, and 72 under th e auspices of th e R egional Councils of New Y ork, w as opened by M rs. R osa lie Polche, U N W LA B ranch 72 president. A biographical sketch of M rs. V olker and h er effo rts on behalf of hum an rig h ts w as given by M rs. A lexandra Riznyk, U N W LA B ranch 53 president. M rs. L idia B urachynska greeted served as well. The m ost popular of th ese w ere beans w ith m ush room s, dry peas flavored w ith oil and garlic, cooked beans, and sim m ered m ushroom s. M uch baking was done fo r th e C hristm as holy days. Besides th e C hristm as bread, th e housew ives baked a v ariety of p astries w hich w ere eaten a t Holy N ig h t Supper and served to carol ers. Because su g ar cane w as not h arvested in U kraine and honey w as abundant, it was used as a sw eetner. M edianyky (honey cakes) w ere th e specialty of m any a U krainian housew ife. These, along w ith poppy seed cakes and rolls w ere especially popular w ith th e youngsters. N ot all of us can follow th e trad itio n al C hristm as m enu, b u t we all w ant to p a rta k e of th e s p irit of th e Holy N ig h t suppers of our ancestors. T herefore, we are eager to u nd erstan d th e tra d itions of th e C hristm as ritu a l for th ey serve as a link w ith our a n cestors of long ago. M rs. V olker on beh alf of th e U N W LA E xecutive B oard and underscored th e significance of th e aw ard fo r our organization. In tu rn , greeting s w ere extended on behalf of th e U N W LA R e gional Councils of N ew Y ork and N ew ark by M rs. Olha Sonevyc- ka, vice president, and M rs. Iren a Levycka, president. M rs. D orothy Lozowy, president of U N W LA B ranch 32, presented M rs. V olker w ith a sm all m em n- to dated O ctober 15, 1968. The m ain speaker w as M rs. A n astasia Volker. She described h er feelings upon receiving th e aw ard and noted th a t in th e p an el discussion on hum an rig h ts she underscored th e m any con trib u tio n s of th e U krainian e th nic group to th e m ulti-faceted com m unity life of th e U nited S tates. The official p rog ram ended w ith a tea and inform al discus sion period. Chyz w as a high school teacher, w riter and w om en’s page editor. She h as an M.A. degree from th e U niversity of M ontreal and is A ssistan t L i b ra ria n th e re a t p resent. The book is a factu al account of life under Com m unism based on letters, eye-w itness accounts, personal testim ony, etc. The pub lication of th is book w as p ro m p t ed by th e ap ath y tow ard s th e th re a t of th e C om m unist world dom ination and th e lack of actual knowledge am ong free peoples of w h at life in th e USSR is really like. The book is no t en tertain in g nor is it easy read in g b u t it should be given to every liberal who says “b e tte r red th a n dead.” A . The press release issued by th e com m ittee stressed th a t she w as in stru m en tal in form in g an ad hoc com m ittee w ith a group of w om en from C entral and E a ste rn E u ropean countries. It w as also m entioned th a t she p articip ated in issuing th e C aptive N ations W eek S tatem ent, co-sponsored by fo u r w om en’s groups.
