“ SOYUZ U K R A IN O K ” BRA NCH 72 M U SICA LE The F ifth A nnual M usicale held on Sunday, N ovem ber 13, 1966 a t th e U k rain ian In s titu te of A m erica, New Y ork C ity, epi tom ized th e e ffo rts of th e m em bers of B ranch 72 of “Soyuz U k- ra in o k .” M ary L esaw yer, P re si d en t of B ranch 72, welcomed th e g u ests and introduced O lga Li- teplo, C hairm an of th e M usicale, and M ary Tollock, C o-C hairm an. The tw o young asp irin g a r tis ts p resen ted w ere Z irk a D erlycia, soprano, and M a rg aret Leshkiw , h a rp ist. M iss D erlycia’s b ea u tifu l voice com m unicated radiance and p e r sonal w a rm th in th e v aried selec tions by S carla tti, M ozart, V er di, Lysenko, B arvinsky and Ma- tiu k . H er accom panist, Juliane M ueller, provided a p e rfe c t back g round fo r th e vocal re p erto ire. Z irka, a H u n te r College g ra d u a te now a tte n d in g New Y ork U niversity, s ta rte d h e r m usical M a rg aret is a talen ted 15-year career upon e n te rin g college. She is a m em ber of th e U k ra in ian M usic In s titu te w here she is a stu d e n t of C laudia T aran o v a and E ugene K rachno. Z irk a also san g w ith th e U k rain ian S tu d ents Q u a rte t and m ade h e r de b u t a t th e D um ka C horus’ “C hai- nyi V ech ir” in 1965. M a rg a re t L eshkiw ’s p erfec t h a rp technique show s g re a t a r tistic ability. H er selections in cluded w orks by Salzedo, P ra tt, R enie, and an E n g lish ballad, old stu d e n t of th e h arp , h aving studied fo r th ree -an d -a-h a lf y ea rs w ith h e r m o th er, a ta le n t ed h a rp is t and teac h er in h er own rig h t. T he young a r tis t h as won several aw ard s in various g rad es of h a rp com petition a t H u n te r College d u rin g th e p a st th re e y ears. In th e sp rin g of 1966 she won th e h ig h e st aw ard in h e r group in th e M usic E d u c a to rs’ L eague of New Y ork, and has tw o successful television appearances to h e r credit. Follow ing th e ir perform ances, th e young a r tis ts w ere p resen ted w ith w h ite orchids by A nne H a r rison on b eh a lf of th e m em bers of B ranch 72. A reception followed a t th e conclusion of th e recital.
