M rs. B ieliukas’ d ea th in N ew Y ork C ity on Ju n e 28 a t th e age of 41 w as a ttrib u te d to asth m a. A l th o u g h she had been in poor h e a lth fo r m any y ea rs and w as advised to cu rta il h e r activities, she nev er sp ared h e rse lf in th e ta sk s to w hich she h ad dedicated h e r life. P re sid e n t of th e F ed eratio n of L ith u a n ia n W om en’s Clubs since 1953, In te rn a tio n a l Clubs’ h o s t ess of th e GFW C and board m em ber of W om en fo r F reedom a t th e tim e of h e r p assing, M rs. B ieliukas h ad also served as p re sid e n t of th e B altic W om en’s Council fo r th re e te rm s and as GFW C N atio n alities A dvisor. A s a h ig h school stu d e n t in h e r n ativ e L ith u an ia, M rs. B ie liukas w as active in th e u n d er ground m ovem ent d u rin g th e C om m unist and N azi occupations of h e r c o u n try ; she d istrib u te d illegal lite ra tu re , helped young people escape N azi labor un its, sm uggled arm s to freedom fig h t ers and sh eltered them . In 1943 h e r philosophical stu d ies a t th e U n iv ersity of K au n as w ere su s pended w hen th e N azis closed th e u n iv ersity . A t th e approach of th e R u ssian C om m unist arm y, she escaped to G erm any w here, in 1945, she en tered M axim ilian L udw ig U n iv ersity in M unich as a psychology m ajo r. She g ra d u a te d in 1948. D u rin g th e in terim she served as p re sid e n t of th e 'In te rn atio n al S tu d e n ts Council and w as one of th e fo u n d ers of th e U N R R A U n iv ersity in M u nich. M rs. B ieliukas cam e to th e U n ited S ta te s in 1949 w ith h e r p a re n ts. She w as forced to give up h e r stu d ies in th e h u m an ities and fin d a new p rofession as a m eans of livelihood. A t h e r d e a th she w as Blood B ank su p er v iso r a t th e H o sp ital of th e A l b e r t E in ste in College o f M edi cine in N ew Y ork C ity. She w as re g iste re d w ith th e A m erican A ssociation of Clinic P ath o lo g ists as a m edical technologist and w as engaged in re searc h of new blood groups. She h ad also been in ch arg e of th e Blood B ank a t R oosevelt H ospital fo r m any y ears. A n eloquent speaker and a lin g u ist who spoke U k rain ian am ong m any o th er languages, L igia B ieliukas w as a frie n d of all th e captive natio n s and often addressed A m erican and eth n ic groups on th e anti-C om m unist stru g g le. M rs. B ieliukas will be rem em bered w ith esteem and a f fection by U N W L A officers and m em bers w ith w hom she cooper a ted over th e y ears. H e r m ost re cen t appearances a t U k rain ian events w ere a t th e U N W LA W orld’s F a ir reception and a t th e U N W LA Convention b a n q u et la st N o v e m b e r; som e of us la st saw h e r a t th e GFW C Con vention in Chicago early in June, a few w eeks before h e r death. She is survived by h e r h u s band, B ronius B ieliukas, a noted law yer and civic leader, and by h e r m o th er, M rs. M a rija Bezu- m avicius. W e shall all sorely m iss L igia B ieliukas in our com m on endeav ors to w hich she co n trib u ted so m uch, so selflessly. To th e au- Senora Leonor C o n treras de R ussi of B ogota, Colombia, v isit ed th e U N W LA H e ad q u a rte rs on N ovem ber 5, 1966. She is th e se c re ta ry of th e A ssociation fo r A dult E d u catio n and cam e to th e U. S. on a UN ESCO re searc h scholarship. In th e course of h er v isit to P h ilad elp h ia w here she to u red various educational in s ti tu tio n s, she w as d irected by th e N atio n al Council of A m erican W om en to th e U k ra in ia n N a tio n al W om en’s L eague of A m erica. T o g eth er w ith M rs. S tephanie P u sh k a r, U N W LA P resid en t, and M rs. S tephen H aas, m em b er of th e F ed eratio n of W om en’s Clubs, she to u red th e new C ath ed ral of th e Im m aculate Conception and o th e r U k rain ian com m unity centers. In th e eve n in g th e U N W LA E xecutive B oard and R egional Council h o sted b o th g u ests a t a supper in th e U N W L A H e ad q u arte rs. Senora de R ussi expressed h er app reciatio n fo r th e kind recep tio n w hich she received as a g u e st of th e U N W LA , and M rs. H aas h ad w ords of p ra ise fo r th e im pressive v a rie ty of U k ra in ian educational in stitu tio n s. BOOKCLUBS In O ctober, 1966 th e W FU W O E xecu tiv e B oard in itia te d an in ten siv e cam paign to estab lish Bookclubs in th e various U k ra in ian w om en’s organizations. T hese Bookclubs u n ite wom en w ho are in te re ste d in U k rain ian lite ra tu re . M eetings a re held m o nthly in m em b ers’ hom es and books of in te re s t are discussed. Some clubs also sponsor m eetings w ith noted a u th o rs and a rra n g e book exhi bits. th o r of th is sh o rt trib u te , L igia w as n o t only a dear frie n d b u t a counselor to w hom she often tu rn e d fo r valued advice and guidance.
