C andidates a re chosen fro m th e v arious fileds — lite ra tu re , m usic, a rt, dance, as well as th e professions and civic a ffa irs. T his y ea r we selected a young stag e a c tre ss—L a ry ssa K ukryc- ka. M iss K u k ry ck a w as born in E urope and b ro u g h t up in th e U nited S ta tes. A s a child she w as a ttra c te d to a r t and la te r p u r sued studies in th is field a t H u n te r College and C olum bia U ni v ersity . B u t love fo r th e stag e, f ir s t n u rtu re d a t th e U k rain ian D ra m a Studio in N ew Y ork C ity, won out. She enrolled a t th e Lee S tra sb e rg A rt S tudio and in a sh o rt w hile g ra d u a te d to th e B roadw ay stag e. H ere, u n d er th e sta g e nam e of L a ry ssa L a u re t she appeared in such produc tio n s as T ennessee W illiam s’ “T he N ig h t of th e Ig u a n a ” and th e c o m e d у “M arriage-G o- R ound.” She also appeared in th e off-B roadw ay production of “ O ne-Eyed M an is K in g ” and p o rtra y e d one of H en ry V III’s w ives in “T he R oyal G am bit.” L a ry ssa K u k ry ck a also h as a flo u rish in g career in th e m ovies and on television. She appeared in th e leading roles in th e film s “T he P ru d e and L a P arisien n e,” and “E n co u n te r,” w hich have n o t y e t been released in th is cou n try . H er television ap p e ar ances include: th e NBC-TV A l coa H our, th e U. S. Steel H our, th e C atholic H our, and such day tim e show s as “ Love of L ife ” an d “T he S ecret S to rm .” O f special in te re st to us are h e r accom plishm ents in th e U k ra in ian “N ew T h e a te r” w hich she helped to organize. In 1966 th e “ N ew T h e a te r” stag ed L esya U k ra in k a’s “T he Stone H o st” u n d er th e direction of W olody- m y r L ysniak, M iss K u k ry c k a’s h u sband. M iss K u k ry c k a appear- T he f ir s t resolution adopted by th e 33rd A nnual C onvention of th e U k rain ian Y outh L eague of N o rth A m erica com m em o ra te d th e proclam ation of U k ra in ia n independence in 1917. T his h isto ric m ilestone will be th e su b ject of special com m em o ra tio n s th ro u g h o u t 1967. The U k rain ian C ongress C om m ittee A m erica h as planned w idescale com m em orative observances to m ark th e fiftie th an n iv e rsa ry of U k ra in ia n independence. R allies, m arches, m eeting’s, and conven tions will serve to rem ind us of th a t g re a t m om ent in our m od ern-day h isto ry and to acq u ain t our A m erican frie n d s w ith its significance. T he Ukrainian W om en’s L eague of A m erica is also m ak in g p re p a ra tio n s to m a rk th is h isto ric a n n iv ersary . T his Ju b i lee Y ear h as a special sig n ifi cance fo r U k ra in ia n w om en — it m ark s th e 50th a n n iv e rsa ry of U k ra in e’s independence and th e w inning of th e vote by U k ra in ian wom en. T he P a rlia m e n t w hich convened in 1917 — th e U k ra in ia n C entral R ada — voted on equal civil rig h ts fo r wom en. F o r th e f ir s t tim e U k rain ian wom en voted a t th e polls — fo r th e fo rm a tio n of th e U k ra in ia n N atio n al R epublic. In hon o rin g th e f ir s t wom en m em bers of P a rlia m e n t w ho re p re se n te d us in th e U k ra in ia n C entral R ada we w ish to in fo rm A m erican w om en of th e fa c t th a t U k ra in ia n w om en achieved full civil rig h ts 50 y ea rs ago and th a t alth o u g h th e y w ere unable ed in th e play in th e role of Don n a A nna, one of th e m o st com plex c h a ra c te rs in U k ra in ia n dram a. W e w ish th is young ta le n te d ac tress success and h appiness in h e r w ork! to ta k e ad v a n ta g e of th e se rig h ts in th e ir n a tiv e land th e y con firm ed th e ir p re ro g a tiv e to th e m in th e stru g g le fo r U k ra in e’s in dependence. A lth o u g h th e n am es of N a ta lia K o b ry n sk a and O lena K ysi- lew ska a re fa m ilia r to us we know relativ ely little abo u t th e o th er w om en w ho stood a t th e fo re fro n t of th e U k ra in ia n wom en’s m ovem ent and who helped to fo rm u late th e ir c o u n try ’s law s and policies. T he dire need fo r E n g lish language sources in th is field su g g ests a v ery p ra c ti cal w ay of observing th is Jubilee Y ear. By p re p a rin g th e needed m a te ria ls in th e E n g lish la n guage, we will enable o u r m em b ers to becom e acq u ain ted w ith th e pioneers of th e U k rain ian w om en’s m ovem ent — such n o t able fig u re s as Z inaida M irna and L udm ila S tary ck a-C h ern ia- kh iv sk a, th e f ir s t w om en m em bers of th e U k ra in ia n C en tral R ada.
