(M arily n T erran o v a, w in n e r) Ukrainian Dishes MALE READER SENDS IN CAKE RECIPE Mr. Wasyl Gina of New Ha ven, Conn., writes: ‘Although I realize that “Our Life” is pri marily a woman’s magazine, I would like to submit a recipe which I have found highly suc cessful and which I would like to share with your readers.” The recipe for Mr. Gina’s Chestnut Torte follows: Chestnut Torte Prepare a thick icing by cook ing 1 cup of granulated sugar with half-cup of water. Cook un til mixture spins a thread. Then pour mixture into a bowl and stir, in one direction, until it be comes thick and white and coats the spoon. Do not use an electric beater. Allow mixture to cool and harden. Now, prepare the batter by setting aside the following ingre dients : 1 cup blanched, p eeled alm onds, chopped an d p o u n d ed to a paste Уг cup g ra n u la te d sugar 6 egg w hites, stiffly b e a te n D ash of salt Combined almond paste, sugar and salt, and stir until blended. Fold in stiffly-beaten egg whites. Line two pie tins with butter and bread crumbs, pour half the mixture into each, and bake in 350 degrees oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a light golden brown. For the filling prepare 1 pound parboiled chestnuts, shelled and peeled. Place in pan and cover with milk. Simmer until very soft. Mast, add vanilla sugar to taste and press through sieve. Melt i/4 lb. butter and cool. CHRISTMAS EVE IN UKRAINE Marie Halun-Bloch’s new book “The Two Worlds of Damian” in clude many features of Christ mas preparations in present day Ukraine. CONGRESS IN PARIS The Congress of the World Mothers’ Movement was held on November 3 through 5, 1966, in Paris. The theme of the Congress A SUCCESSFUL SOCIAL EVENT The gala Dinner-Dance at the Americana Hotel, arranged by UNWLA Branch 72 in New York City on May 7, 1966, attracted a sell-out crowd that included the younger and older members of the Ukrainian community. During the Dinner Branch of ficers and prominent guests were introduced. The proceeds from the affair were designated for three deserving causes: the UNWLA Scholarship Fund, the National Welfare Fund of the Ukrainian American Veterans and the Ukrainian “Sitchovi Striltsi.” One of the highlights of the evening was a raffle which fea tured many valuable prizes in cluding a 5-day excursion to Washington and Williamsburg, sponsored by the Kowbasniuk Agency, which was won by Mrs. M. Terranova of Brooklyn, N. Y. Cream the melted butter until frothy and blend with chestnut puree. Set about % cup of this filling aside, flavor the rest with rum and fill in between the two torte layers. Take the hardened icing, dil ute with the remaining portion of the filling (make this part lemon flavored) and spread over entire cake. Allow to set before cutting. was — preparing youth for mar riage. Materials for the Congress were collected from a series of polls which were conducted in various communities. Ukrainian women’s organizations took part in this undertaking by sending in a number of completed ques tionnaires. A more detailed report on the Congress and the resolutions which were adopted will be in cluded in our next issue. A leader does not say “Get going!” Instead, a leader says “Let’s go!” and leads the way.
