What to Read About Ukraine The well known American writer of children’s books. Marie Halun Bloch has four titles of special interest to all Ukrainian Americans. Though written pri marily for children, these books, like all good literature, can be read and enjoyed by readers of all ages. Written from a Ukrain ian vantage point, these books will be cherished by all who know and value their Ukrainian heritage. Bloch, Marie Halun. Marya of Clark Avenue. New York, Cow- ard-McCann, 1957. 190 p. The dilemma of an immig rant’s child suffering from a conflict of loyalties, torn be tween the Ukrainian home and the American school, is resolved by integrating the best qualities of both cultures. Marya learns to her delight and surprise that her Ukrainian background can be viewed as an asset in the plural istic American society. Bloch, Marie Halun, tr. Uk rainian Folk Tales. New York, Coward-McCann, 1964. 76 p. Pan Kotsky, Seerko, the Spite ful Nanny Goat (Koza Dereza) and other familiar characters of Ukrainian folklore come to life once more in this delightful Eng lish rendition of twelve Ukrain ian folk tales translated from the original collections of Ivan Rud- chenko and Maria Lukiyanenko. Excellent black and white illus trations by J. Hnizdovsky form an integral part of this beauti fully produced book. Bloch, Marie Halun. Aunt America. New York, Atheneum, 1963. 148 p. This novel of contemporary Ukraine under the Soviets pre sents a psychological portrait of a nine year-old girl whose sense of life’s values is profoundly in fluenced by an unexpected visi tor from America. Written with an inside knowledge of the sub ject, the book presents a realis tic picture of life in a Ukrainian village of today and places into juxtaposition the realities of de mocracy and totalitarianism, of freedom and submission. Bloch, Marie Halun. The Two Worlds of Damyan. New York, Atheneum, 1966. 169 p. A sensitive story of a Ukrain ian boy growing up in contempo rary Kiev who must resolve the conflict that exists between the values of his tradition-oriented Ukrainian home and those of the Russified materialistic Soviet so ciety. The road to life’s success is one that leads inevitably away from the security and isolation of home, but Damyan learns how to maintain his integrity by re fusing to surrender to the en forced conformity of the outside world. Except for the first title, these books may be ordered directly from their publishers: Ukrain ian Folk Tales from Coward- McCann, Inc., 200 Madison Ave., New York, N. Y., 10016; Aunt Amer i ca and The Two Worlds of Damyan from Atheneum Pub lishers, 162 E. 38th St., New York, N. Y. 10016. Mary of Clark Avenue is no longer in print, but who knows — if the readers’ demand is sufficiently great — perhaps the publisher could be induced to put out an other edition?— Marty 50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE UKRAINIAN REVOLUTION During its Annual Convention held on September 2 in Detroit, Mich., the Ukrainian Youth League of North America joined in commemorating the Ukrain ian national revolution, which is observed annually by all Ukrain ian organizations. In 1917 the Ukrainian people undertook an active struggle for national inde pendence and fought long and bitterly to free Ukraine from foreign domination. In 1967 all Ukrainians in the Free World will join in commemorating the 50th anniversary of this historic milestone.
