League of Ukrainian Catholic Women of Canada u H an n a C h y k alen k o K eller Its beginning is to be found in the early 1930s, when the first women’s divisions were formed at the Brotherhood of Ukrainian Catholics. In 1944 they decided, at a Catholic Congress in York- ton, Sask. to become an organ i zation on its own. Mrs. Maria Dyma was elected president. In 1947 it voted to adopt its char ter. The League of Ukrainian CBtholic Women is dedicated to help the social needs and prob lems of Canadian life. Directed through principles of Christian faith, the League tries to apply them in life and work. Being deeply rooted in the traditions of their homeland, Ukraine, members of the LUC WO culti vate them in the new country. They study with interest wom en’s life in Ukraine and espe cially the religious persecution to which they are subjected. At present the League of Uk rainian Catholic Women is di vided into four diocesan parts with 170 Branches and 5,000 members. Its Headquarters is in Edmonton, Alberta, with Mrs. Irene Pawlykowska as President. M rs. Iren e P aw ly k o w sk a, P re sid e n t of LUCW O Its first field of work is the religious activity of the mem bers and who are urged to work on their own betterment. Once in the year, on the Day of LU CWO the members get better acquainted with the goal of their organization. Their most power ful division is charity. Beside its participation in different Cana dian drives LUCWO is a mem ber of the United Appeal. Its help for the needy in the Uk rainian community is also very important. Educational work of the LUCWO includes scholar ships, Day Centers for children, summer schools and financial help for Catholic Educational Centers. A special concern of LUCWO is folk art and its cul tivation. In Edmonton and Sas katoon museum collections of Ukrainian folk art were found ed. In 1957 LUCWO became a member of the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organizations. Delegates represented it at the Congresses in Rome (1957, 1961). The work of LUCWO is often mentioned in the bulletins of the World Union. LUCWO publishes its own pages in Cath olic weeklies of Toronto and Win nipeg. OBITUARY On October 19, 1964 a news report from West Germany stated that Hanna Chykalenko Keller died in Tubingen at the age of 80. Her last years were spent far from Ukrainian cen ters and her scholarly work. Hanna Chykalenko was born in Ukraine in 1884. She got a fine education, studying at uni versities in Lausanne, Switzer land and Edinburgh, Scotland. After World War I she repre sented Ukrainian women’s or ganizations at the Congress of International Women’s Alliance in Geneva (1920) and Interna tional Women’s Council in Oslo (1921) and Washington, D. C. (1925). In later years she was a lecturer on Slavonic languages at the University of Tubingen and worked as librarian there. Her journalistic work and liter ary translations are important. Her funeral brought many friends together. An address by the President of the Ukrainian Women’s Association, in West Germany reminded the many present of her merits in this field. 40th ANNIVERSARY IN BRAZIL Ukrainian women’s organiza tions in Brazil marked the 40th anniversary of the first wom en’s organization. It was founded in 1924 in Curitiba, Parana, which place is now the headquar ters of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Brazil. 20th ANNIVERSARY OF OUR LIFE The Women’s magazine OUR LIFE, published by the Ukrain ian National Women’s League of America marked, this year, its 20th anniversary.
